SUNY Downstate ABSN Summer 2013

Published

Hi All!

I wanted to start this thread to create some conversation about our application to SUNY Downstate's ABSN program beginning Summer 2013. I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the program and I would like us all to share some of our thoughts! Do any of you have a Bachelor's already? If so what is it in? Where did you take your pre reqs and stuff? What are some of your grades? I took all of my pre-reqs at Suffolk Community College. I received an A in A&P I & II (incl labs), Microbio (incl lab), Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, Developmental Psych, Group Theory/Social Psychology, & English I. I received a B+ in Chemistry and English II. My TEAS V scores are Reading: 91 and Math: 87. I also have my BA from Stony Brook University. Also, I applied to SB last year and did not get accepted to there program. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with Downstate and I do not know what more a prospective student can do! If there are any recent grads of the ABSN program out there please give a shout out! Any advice or opinions will help! Good luck everyone and hopefully we will all be together in the summer!!!!

Thanks! Supposedly my application hasn't been reviewed yet. Hopefully I hear soon. Congrats though!

Congrats to all accepted students! i graduated in august '10. I have two nursing uniform shirts, size L, if anyone is interested.

My checklist changed too asking for background check and health stuff. There's also a neat little item that says acceptance response form =)

Hopefully my envelope comes soon so I can finish this list once and for all.

Does anyone know when the program officially starts?

Orientation is on Monday, June 3. ( getting IDs, registering, etc)

Classes start on Tuesday, June 4

Brooklyn gal..............

Awesome thanks Brooklyn gal. Anyone know if it's hard to get parking around there?

Glad to see more people getting their acceptances--congrats to those who've been admitted! I assume I didn't get in (my grades aren't outstanding) but I can't help hoping to hear soon.

Jeanette73, were you happy with the program? I can't PM but I was wondering how you felt about it as well as your choice to pursue the NP.

Overall, yes, i was happy with the program. People in my class had various complaints but in every program there will be things to complain about, and for the price you really can't do better than Downstate. I chose it because of the in-state tuition as well as because it was conveniently located for me. You'll do your clinicals in Brooklyn hospitals which are a mixed bag as far as quality, and with some preceptors you're lucky if you ever get to touch a live patient or do any procedures. You really need to advocate for yourself and constantly put yourself out there if you want a chance to practice skills.

Post graduation the support available to you for job searching is practically nil. Many of my classmates had success in landing good jobs after graduation but I was not one of the lucky ones. I ended up going to a different (much more expensive) school for my NP hoping that my odds of finding a job after graduation would improve. Well, I just finished my masters and guess what, the job market is tough regardless of where you went to school.
