Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015

U.S.A. New York

Published

It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

Not sure what advice or input to give about the interviews....Don't be nervous! As hard as that may be to do, remember that everyone else in the room is feeling the same thing. Don't let your nerves get the best of you! do what you would normally do for any other interview. remember your strengths, recognize your weaknesses, show your passion, that sort of stuff.

Paco was a great source and guidance when I applied last year, and I hope I can do the same and pay it forward to you guys. While he can speak to you guys about his current work experience, it might be best to ask me about the current curriculum since I'm part of the younger generation ;) (hahahha paco, im just kidding!!) it's also great that you guys are helping each other out too!

*also, i want to suggest that while you are at stony for the interview, take a look around the hospital, Health Science Center building, stony brook area, etc. if you have the time. while they are trying to see if you're a good fit for them, remember that it's just as important to see that stony is a good fit for YOU. goooodddd luckkkkk!!

Hey Paco! Thanks for posting - I've loved reading all your posts and info on the past year threads. :) Are you still working at SBUH? Anyway hopefully I'll be walking in your footsteps in future SB threads, haha![/quote']

Yes, I am still at SBUH ... for now :) Ideally wanted to be in NYC after graduation but opted to stay here to get experience under my belt, knowing how hard it is to get new grad jobs there competing with grads from other schools there. My hope is that I will have a better job search later on with experience, from a fine trauma center at that.

Sounds very smart to me! I grew up the next town over, so I'm familiar with the hospital and it has a great rep. To me it'd even be worth it to work at SBUH and move back to Brooklyn and just commute those three (or whatever) days a week...

There are several nurses here that live in the city, believe it or not. I guess they do work it out so that they travel minimally. Keep in mind however, it is not simply 3 times a week. Because working @ SBUH means you are a state employee, you have to work six 12-hour shifts and one 8-hour shifts per pay period (total is 80 hours), so in essence if you work 3 days in one week, you will have to work 4 the following, and under union rules, you have to work one weekend per pay period (Sat/Sun). However, depending on your unit and when you have decent seniority, you are able to request the days you want to work and days off ahead of time and get pretty much what you want. It is nice. However, that extra 8 hour day is something most hospitals dont have, so I wont miss it when I leave lol.

Hey there, Paco! Nice to see you again!

Listen to what this man says everyone, it's gold. His advice helps immensely ;)

For the interviews, the only things I know they'll definitely be looking for are passion, maturity, and being a team player. Every year our director tells us how everyone who gets into this program is type A and how other groups haven't gotten along in the past. Our group gets along really well and she absolutely loves it and tells us how well we work together. It's really important to them that people can work as a team and can encourage everyone to work together :)

Other than that, just be nice and shoe them how much you want to be a nurse and how hard you're going to try on the program :)

Let us know if you hear anything else about the interviews! I'm curious :)

Haha, useful info indeed! Well, at least my folks still live in St. James, so it wouldn't be like I'm traveling out there for nothing. But I'm getting WAY, WAY ahead of myself... :)

Whoops, sorry, wanted to clarify that my response was to Paco. Thanks, GoVeg, for your additional insight! I'm finishing up my essay and really excited about submitting the application.

Just applied! woo!

Hi guys! I am also scheduled for an interview this month! I'm very excited and hope to meet some of you on interview day

Hi everyone. I found out a little more about the interview. It's a group interview with several other students and faculty. There is a basic math exam and also a brief writing sample. They said it could take up to 3 hours. Can't wait. Good luck!!!

Does anyone know if everybody goes for an interview?

I got a call for an interview also. Do we know if an interview is now required for all applicants or just selected applicants??

Hey all, I applied for the 1 year and 2 year last year and got denied from both. I have my BS in dietetics and am looking to nursing for something more "hands on medical" then just nutritional counseling. My GPA isnt great so I figured that was the reason I did not get in. From Oneonta I have a 2.8 and I just completed the rest of my pre-reqs at Suffolk CC and did better. I have a 3.3 there. Still not fantastic but it's better I suppose. I'm an awful test taker and I work so hard and my grades just don't show for it. I was pretty discouraged and was dead set on NOT applying to the accelerated program, but after reading all of the posts and thinking about my background, I think i'm having a change of heart! I have been working in a nursing home the last 2 years since graduation (only has concierge and activites assistant) but maybe that will be some sort of experience??? Even though my chances are limited, it seems like there's still a slight chance. I only have a few days left to figure out what i'm doing haha talk about last minute! But good luck to everyone who applied!!! Don't give up!!
