Hey everyone, I posted a few days ago about being really excited about applying to SPSON and achieving a 91% on the HESI. The next step is the interview with the President, but now, after doing some extensive research I am not excited at all. I will not be going to this school if I get accepted. I checked the NCLEX Pass rates for this school online and the pass rates have dropped dramatically from 2012 to 2013. It went from 80.9% (Queens Campus) to 58.6%. That is insane. What is going on with this school?!

I was going to attend regardless of some of it's bad reviews because the pass rates seemed close to decent, but as of lately their pass rates look like a total disaster. This has completely convinced me to go a different route. Unfortunately for me, my transcript is not a work of art so this was last hope of getting into an RN program. I'll have to go the LPN route for now.

Has anyone else applied to SPSON for the Spring 2015?

Cannot say if it affected SPSON one way or another as of April 2013 the passing standard for NCLEX RN and PN exams was increased. This change was voted on in 2012 which is long after many students would have entered nursing programs. If you look at many schools in NYC many programs took a hit as a good number of grads failed to pass.

While it is important to consider board passing rates when considering a nursing program, research must also follow as to what numbers reflect.

Thanks for the input. Some schools did take a hit with the new changes. My other fear with SPSON is that they could get shut down someday if they don't improve. If I attend and they get shut down, I'll have no where to take my credits because the school is not accredited. There's a lot to think about.

I actually spoke to a friend today that attended spson last semester, she withdrew and had nothing good to say. She said the school is very disorganized, the instructors are rude, and that you are basically on your own. She is currently at bmcc working towards getting onto their program.

Yeah I haven't heard any good things at all. I don't really know what decision to make if I end up getting accepted. It's so hard to get into a nursing program anywhere if your not almost perfect. I don't know if this opportunity should be wasted.

I am , sadly, confused as to whether I should pursue an education, if accepted, with them because of the scary stories I keep hearing and coming across. I currently work at a hospital where they do their clinical and I get mixed reviews about the school after asking current students. I am also confused to whether they are accredited by NLN or not because they are listed as a member on their website. Has anyone heard any positive reviews of the school? Know any graduates and where they got jobs after graduating spson? Or even got in to rn-bsn programs? I am just afraid to waste time and money.

I've decided to pursue an education with them if I get accepted. I spoke to a student and she said she loved it. My mother also works with a student from SPSON at a city hospital who only hires people from accredited institutions. Apparently, being accredited doesn't mean specifically NLN accredited. SPSON is ABHES accredited. The director also explained that will pursue NLN accredidation in the future.

just be careful with the accreditation with this school. I was accepted but backed out when I looked closely since many other schools don't accept there credits.

Ok it's great to hear positive feedback finally! Yes i work for a city hospital also, that's how i found out about SPSON. I recently began seeing students from there doing clinical so maybe you are right because i also see students from bmcc doing clinical at my job. I'm thinking in the past maybe SPSON wasn't as strict in their admissions process which is maybe they do not have such a great name right now. I will ask the nursing department if they hire/have hired graduates from SPSON and let you what they say if you like. Good luck on getting accepted! You'll probably get in , it seems like they are really interested only students who take nursing school very serious. I'm not sure when the acceptance letters go out but this waiting process is very nerve wrecking which is probably contributing to my doubts.....but anyway good luck again

Good evening, for some reason I can't figure out how to reply through my laptop but anywho I have kind of a great update. I didn't get a chance to speak to hr yet but I will definitely do it tomorrow. I did a little more research and discovered that spson has a partnership with excelsior college for rn-bsn, MSN etc..(think it's online not sure but it's located in albany), which is fully accredited by the acen. Also a different route would be to go to adelphi university with is in long island I believe ....it says if you have a degree or diploma from a non accredited college you have to earn 24 credits from excelsior college.....I will try to give you the links in a few. Also I received an email last week regarding cpr classes so I called and asked if it has anything to do with being accepted and she said no its a class they give for everyone. I also called admissions today and asked when the acceptance letters will go out and she said that they will be making calls to the people who were accepted since it's so close to the start of the program. She also said she is about to go on vacation. Hope this info is of help..........

Ok the accreditation website I used was Coming Soon - Future home of something quite cool the website for excelsior/st. Paul's partnership is http://www.excelsior.edu/web/partners/saint -pauls and I also have to take back what I said about adelphi it states that diploma graduates must take and pass 24 credits from excelsior college.....this is the website RN to BSN | Nursing Programs - Long Island, NY
