new grad rn case manager for home care agency

U.S.A. New York

Published

so. i have applied to every hospital, and nursing home in nyc multiple times....i have been out of school for over a year now. i need a job because evry day i go without one decrees my chances of ever getting one as an rn (i need to get some sort of experience as opposed to no experience at all). i really would love a hospital job but that hasnt come my way yet ( hospitals keep choosing the experienced rn over the new grad for bottom line reasons). i havent even been able to land a ltc job.

soooooooo ....i went to americare css today and what do you know...looks like i have a chance of getting hired...... looks like they are considering me for a case management position (they may have one available home care rn position but i got the feeling they prefered me for case management which i got the impression does not really require feild work).

sooo i guess my questions are...is it a good idea for a new grad to take on a case manager position? does anyone know how long the orientation is for a case manager at americare? does anyone work as a case manager for americare that would like to give me a first hand account of what the job is like? what are the hours like? what is the salary like? what are the working atmosphere like? can i expect to get out on time or dont even bother to dream about that?

any and all feedback is welcome.

thankx

I know some NG Case Managers and they seem to enjoy their jobs. Sorry, I don't know the answers to your other questions. Take it, it's better than nothing at all.

hi orgo geek,

I also went to yesterday to the open house. Were you intereviewed by the director of recruitment. When are you going back for your second interview? From what I hear, the pay is very good.

nurselenachka.. i i sent you a pm, i hope that is alright with you.

also wanted to add. does anyone know the going rate for a new grad home care rn case manager? just curious about a ball park figure

orgo geek,

I cant respond via PM. I have been told its over 70K, not sure though. When are you going back?

If you are a new grad accepting a position as a case manager - how it works in Canada is you will be spending the bulk of your time on your computer in an office making occasional home visits to clients homes, implementing or negotiating services either nursing, home support or nursing home placement. You will be assessing clients and their needs but more from a verbal perspective, filling out many papers and providing very little, if any hands on care. So if you wish to maintain your hands on skills ... you will be losing your touch. If you are organized and enjoy this sort of navigation you may find this very rewarding. Keep in mind if you choose this route, ensure your skill set is not jeopardized if you ever choose to return to hands on nursing..ask that question before you accept.

Decisions, decisions... best wishes on your journey!

I know I am kind of late. The starting salary is over 70k.

@ orgo geek By this time you should already be working as a case manager. How do you like it so far? please share. I am thinking entering the home care world.

Hi All I would just like to add that I went today and things went really well.

I would love to know, how many interviews were needed if more than one was needed, and about how long they take to get in contact with you regarding orientation?

I know this thread is kind of old I just hope someone reads it!:D

LUCKY!!!!!! I was there today for the 3rd time and they told me after filling out all paperwork and sitting for the interview that they were not hiring!!!
