So which of the NYC hospitals offer the best New Grad Residency/Program in your opinion?

Specializes in OB.

I'm currently in the middle of orientation at NYU Medical Center, and their nurse residency program is awesome. It's a lot of classroom time, which can get a little boring, but I know it's stuff I'll need to know, and I feel like the transition to the floor is just right. There is so much support for nurses at this hospital, including/especially the new nurse.

I just met with the residency coordinator at NYP Columbia- and let me just say I was so impressed. With the program, with the hospitals. The new graduate nurse residency coordinator is phenomenal. I'm obviously not in the program (yet!) but from everything she described, it sounds like a very thorough program.

I talked to someone on the phone for NYP Cornell (Upper East side) and their program is 12 months and every new graduate is automatically in the program. The new grad residency at NYP Columbia only accepts 25 students every 6 months. Their residency program is only 6 months. I think both hospitals have their advantages though. Hope this helps some

Hey boykinm,

Thanks for all the info on the residency program! So you're saying for the NYP Cornell, they take in everyone who applies that is a new grad? Do you know how the nurse residency program works, like do they rotate you to different units or do you choose a unit you want to work in? Thanks a lot for the info. I really want to do a nurse residency program, so any info would help =) Thanks

Hey! NYP cornell- every new graduate that is hired is in the residency program for 12 months. This does not replace however long you are in orientation. Rey Rivera, the recruiter said that your residency cohort depends on your orientation state/finish date. At month 6 you work on an evidenced based research project that you present...

At NYP columbia- you get hired by Columbia- apply for the residency (once you have a job) and 25 students are taken. You have general orientation and then 6 months of residency. In addition, you can choose to be an intern.. which is all about "finding your voice as a new nurse"-- basically how to be confident in dealing with MDs. The program sounds great!

For both hospitals, you apply to a specific unit. I really wanted a residency program where they rotate you through- but I never found one that did that.

Thank you so much for the information. I want to work there after I graduate because they have a nurse residency program. :nurse:

hello! I'm a nurse extern at nyu tisch. Just wondering is the gpa requirement the same? above 3.5 for residency?

do they do icu in their residency for new grads or no?

I believe you are hired into a specific area, which could include icu. I know they have a residency in the picu
