New Grad, needs help getting a job at NY presbyterian!!! help

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I just graduated in May 2010 with an Associate degree in nursing, and I'm having a hard time landing a job in NYC. I currently live in Maryland, but will be moving to the city in 2 weeks. I would really love some advise on how to get a RN job in NYC. I'm really interested in L&D or postpartum. I've applied to several hospitals, and have not heard back. NY Presbyterian keeps saying that I do not have the minimum requirements. I would really love to work there since I'll be living a block away from the hospital. I was a nurse extern at one of the hospitals in DC and did an internship in Rwanda as a midwife. I've graduated from my program and have pass the NCLEX, and should be receiving my license in a week. If anyone knows who I could contact or what to do, that would be extremely helpful . Really need help, I'm just so ready to give up...

Thank you,

Uwera

Hello, as an employee I am 100% positive they no longer hire ADNs. Try HHC with full understanding that with yet another big hospital closing it's a zoo out there!!! So many qualified applicants and not enough positions. It is really sad. Good luck! Also try clinics or nursig homes but even then everyones got their belts buckled really tight!

They stopped in January I believe.

My father also works at NYP and he stated that as of the new year they stopped hiring ADN's, even though it still says BSN preferred, they actually aren't hiring ADN grads.

I don't think that poster was trying to be rude to you. She was giving you the honest truth. In fact I think you're the one who came off type snobby.

Instead of purchasing a condo in the city you would of been much better off purchasing a 4 yr education. :hdvwl:An investment in education will always have the greatest return.

So in the end, the poster was right. A person of your apparent financial status and presumable opportunity should of done your research before even applying to a college because the phasing out of ADN's has been going on for a looonnnnggg time. No reason to be surprised at the lack of job opportunities now.

Wow...lol... you're funny!! FYI i do have a 4 yr degree as well as a masters! Anything else???!!! I did my research, and where I currently live ADN's are accepted. I was not expecting to be moving to NY...

It really disappoints me, I thought as nurses we were here to help each other out. I guess not...

You have a step up against all of us. You had experience working as a midwife in Rwanda! That counts alot. You can easily obtain a job with an agency and you can tell them your experience interning in Rwanda as an L&D nurse. Welcome to New York! I am sure you will succeed here.:nurse:

Whoa. Not to go off topic, but I completely understand Sweetiie's response. I think she felt that way due to the very judgemental response. I don't think its fair to dig into personal IRRELEVANT information. I don't think that's anyones business.

Either way, I know the initial poster cleared up her response. But its not cool to keep attacking Sweetiie. It's a little ridiculous.

I use to work in the city at Continuum Hospice. I also worked at North Shore in Long Island. Are you interested in home care? If so, Visiting Nurse Service is another option. I worked with them for 5 years and really enjoyed it. The pay and benefits were very good! I pray everything works out for you. New york is a wonderful place.

Uwera:

you are shooting for the top elitist hospitals...columiba pres, cornell, NYU, Mt. Sinai, even Beth Israel are all pretty adamant now (even though they say preferred BSN)

they really want you to have BSN (at least) I have applied for the NICU at Cornell/Columiba etc and I have 5+ years of experienced with an ADN, and a BA/MA in another field...not only do I not get a personal reply and explanation, but a computerized letter, cold, impersonal, saying that I don't fit their requirements. However, when they list their requirements I meet every one of them and then some except for the BSN. which they say only preferred. Go figure. and to get any more info out of them is next to impossible.

Maybe, if you can afford it when in NYC, perhaps do a fast tract ADN to BSN/MSN; Columiba univ. has a real good program and it is near the hospital albeit very expensive, but financial aid and scholarships are availab.e. With those credentials it is almost a no brainer. However, you must have the time, $ and wherewithal to see it through. Takes alot of perserverance. The ADN which served us well for many years, especially on the East Coast is almost a thing of the past, especially in this current economy. Assuming you are young, and flexible, you should be able to pursue other options as they slowlly beocme available again without too much difficulty. Good luck

don't be so sure...with no experience in home health, they aren't too willing to hire as well. I am an experience nuse in the NICU; I tried to transition into other areas, psych, home health, etc. and yet if you don't have current relevant experience in that particular field, they aren 't interested either (no money to train no manpower, etc.). Finally there was a perfect fit at the Visiting Nurse Service for a maternity nurse, home health, but because I didn'thave the BSN, although I had the experience they were not interested Can't win!!! Anyway, we are leaving the country soon, and I may do something altogether different, like raise exotic cats....one has to know when to say enough and move on...no more trying to suck water from rocks..its new pastures for me.....
