U.S.A. New York

Hello,

I just graduated in May 2010 with an Associate degree in nursing, and I'm having a hard time landing a job in NYC. I currently live in Maryland, but will be moving to the city in 2 weeks. I would really love some advise on how to get a RN job in NYC. I'm really interested in L&D or postpartum. I've applied to several hospitals, and have not heard back. NY Presbyterian keeps saying that I do not have the minimum requirements. I would really love to work there since I'll be living a block away from the hospital. I was a nurse extern at one of the hospitals in DC and did an internship in Rwanda as a midwife. I've graduated from my program and have pass the NCLEX, and should be receiving my license in a week. If anyone knows who I could contact or what to do, that would be extremely helpful . Really need help, I'm just so ready to give up...

Thank you,

Uwera

IN response to your blog..I have applied at the presbitarian several times, only to be regected. They require you to have a BSN for their new grad externship and they also give priority to their interns. NYC is not the best place to move if you are considering RN job. I have been looking since 2009 and nothing.

wow just read through this whole board... drama. haha jk

so does this adn hiring apply to new grads only? because i have my adn with 1.5 years of telemetry and 1.5 years of ER from the los angeles area, and i just sent out my application for NY licensure hoping to land a job there within the next couple of months... by reading this thread it doesnt seem likely i'll be finding a job easily...

Most hospitals in the NYC area want you to have a BSN. I think that even if you have an associate + experience, it might still be hard to get a job. But since they are also looking for experience nurses, you may have a better chance then a new grad with a ADN. Good luck... let me know how it goes.

Hi Mclovin,

I am starting my NY Transferred paper work. Could you help answer some questions about the process?

Did you have to do all three forms? form 1, form 2, and form 3? and did you try to get exemption for both the child abuse and infection control course requirement?

How long did it take to process everything? Thanks any comments would help...since I am sort stress out about this transfer of licensure.

hey phuong, yes all forms 1-3 must be filled out, and i just took the child abuse course online (they have a link for it on the nys website) the infection course is not required to get your license processed, but will be required at time of hire.

i did everything a few weeks ago and im expecting it should take around 3 months or so due forms 2 and 3 being processed by my college and california state board.

WOW 3 months! Is that what CA board of education told you? oh how I hate hate paper work and processing time. Thanks so much for help me out. I won't start

to do transfer until feb. Have you moved to ny yet? I will be in feb...so nervous and exciting. Hope the best for you!

could you send me the link where you completed your abuse class...the list they provided has so many schools and provider and it didn't state whether it was online or not.

Mine only took 5 weeks. You need to stay on top of everything. When you take the required courses (Infection Control and Child Abuse ID), make two copies of each certificate once you've completed them. Mail copies to the NY BON return receipt requested and keep the other copies for your records. When you mail your paperwork to your school of nursing, also mail it return receipt requested. I highlighted all the items on page 2 of that form that they needed to do, and make sure that they stamp it with their seal. Also, you may be able to have your other states BON verify your RN licensure to the NY BON via Nursys.com. It costs 30 dollars. It's faster than mailing them the forms and waiting for them to mail it to NY. Hope that helps. It's all a matter of NY having all the stuff they need and hopefully nothing holding you back from getting a license like a conviction or whatever... Good luck!

Child Abuse and Neglect, New York State | Nursing Continuing Education (CE) Course | NursingCEU.com | Wild Iris Medical Education is the link for child abuse, im not worried to take the infection control course as they do not require it until the time of hire (hopefully, the hospital will provide a class for you)

i followed up with ny bon today and everything is backed up with the process of applications, they've receieved all my forms and payments (i sent out my forms oct. 8) from ca bon and my nursing school. they said it would take at least another 6 weeks to process my application. so hopefully soon i will be licensed and able to start applying.

as far as moving, i haven't done so yet because i dont want to end up being jobless and paying for rent. what part of ny are you trying to relocate to phuong? if the city doesnt work out i was thinking brooklyn.

and one more thing..

don't be so upset about "negative" responses.

you should rather feel very fortunate to have all these people trying to understand and help you through your situation.

it may sound uncomfortable to you since you are not familiar with NYC environment and how NY people talk.

just no hard feelings, we all here to help just like you said.

GOOD LUCK~

Lol, true, I understand because this is how New Yorkers are and how they talk. You'll meet this at the work environments in NYC as well. People just don't mince their words. I would like to know how Sweetie's progress went, it's been 8 yrs since this post. Sweetie, did you finally get a job in a major NYC hospital? If so how?
