Need job in NY...help!!!!!

Good evening everyone,

I need some major help. Currently I reside in Maryland. I've been a Med-Surg Bachelor's prepared nurse for a little over 3 yrs. I received by RN degree and practiced my first 1 1/2 yrs of nursing in the U.S Virgin Islands. The remainder of my nursing career has been spent working in Washington, D.C. My husband lives in NYC for job purposes. I'm relocating to NYC to be with him but can't do so without a job. I've been searching for jobs since November of last yr and that has not turned out as successful as I hoped. I was told that it's best to work in the city and that it wouldn't be as hard to obtain a job since I've got some experience. I beg to differ. I'm in dire need of a job. We plan to live in Brooklyn or Queens so I've been searching for jobs at 3 main Manhattan hospitals: Mount Sinai, NY Presbyterian-Columbia, and Lenox hill. The pickings for job listings that I qualify for at these institutions are so few. I was not selected for 2 job positions I qualified and applied for at Mount Sinai. Haven't heard anything back regarding the single application I filled out at Lenox Hill. And can't find any openings at NYP. Don't know much about hospitals in NY and I'm definitely not getting as far as I would have hoped in this job hunt process. I am open to all suggestions.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! Can anyone suggest any hospitals that would be good to apply to close enough to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens preferably. However I am definitely open to suggestions anywhere else since there is a chance I might not find a job close to where I plan to live. Thank you.

Well that now makes you and several hundred other NYC nurses both experienced and new grads looking for a full time gig. As the saying goes "Step aside...." *LOL*

Things are tight for the NYC nursing market on both sides of the fence but experienced nurses especially those with BSN degrees have a slight edge on things, at least in Manhattan.

Of the hospitals listed in your OP NYP prefers to staff from within first, then looks outside. Lenox-Hill has been doing some hiring (according to reports here and "word on the street"), but again it's mainly experienced nurses and from what one has heard it helps to have someone "inside" the North Shore-Long Island Jewish system. Finally Mount Sinai is a world unto their own it seems and to some considered the "Holy Grail" of nursing jobs around here. Their pre-employment testing (med/dose pharma) exam is rumored to be a killer.

If you are going to be living in Brooklyn or Queens try expanding your search to those broughs and even Staten Island. You may also have to consider Westchester area, parts of New Jersey and Long Island as well.

Apply in the outer boroughs - Manhattan is overrun with applications and no harm, no foul if you're planning on living in Brooklyn or Queens. If you have recent (within the last year) acute experience and three good references, perhaps apply through an agency? You have the needed 2+ years in specialty and should be able to qualify to get your foot in the door.

try lenox hill..they just hired 15 nurses about 10 of us are new grads..they also hired about 20 travelers per diem nurses too. as you know lenox hill is now part of nslij and they have this system based orientation for nurses and last week about 80+ nurses were hired for entire system varied from full time,part time per diem. always check nslijcareers.com as they always have a fellowship program. i think they are about to start a labor and delivery fellowship at lenoxhill and about 10 were hired.

apply to any and all... sadly NYC with several hospital closing is over saturated with experienced nurses and new grads. These days its hard work, connections or just being lucky. look up every hospital, urgent care,rehab, doc's office of your interest and apply to them. Mt sinai and nslij seem to always be hiring too Because you have experience try agencies too: white glove, gotham, promed, specialty staffing, etc. also put a profile on careeer builder.com, linkedin, indeed.com, too i have a friend who got a job offer because a recruiter saw her resume there. I hadn't realized that even with experience it was hard to find work and Good luck.

it varies, depends how much experience you have, what shift, what degree you hold and if you have certifications..try looking up nypnu they have some info
