BSN New Grad and No Jobs

Hi everyone,

I graduated with my BSN in August 2014. Prior to that I was an associates degree RN and could not get a job since everyone wanted BSN, so I went back to school. During school I continued to work as an LPN at a nursing home. So far I have 3yrs LPN experience, but no RN experience. I have sent countless applications to hospitals in all five boroughs and so far have not received one interview. I applied to the NYP new grad program but did not succeed beyond the Nov 24th meet and greet. Most of the jobs I see require acute care experience; no one wants to hire new grads. I get daily headaches from the frustrations. I love NYC, but worse case scenario I am willing to relocate. However, I have been looking at the requirements for hire in other states and all of them seem to be asking for previous hospital experience as well. Does anyone know of anywhere that I could try?

It's rough out there, I know the feeling, been there. I have no info regarding relocation or other states but I would say keep working in the nursing home and make sure you accurately describe what you do in your resume. When I was an LPN I dealt with IV medications, PCA pumps, rehab, and hospice patients and I made sure I put all of it on my resume. The nursing home was also willing to re-hire me as an RN which at minimum showed that I could now manage LPNs and cna's, so don't neglect certain things on your resume. I got hired into the ED as an RN after being an LPN in a NH for 3 years as well, so someone valued my experience.

Albeit like you it took me a long while to find a job.

Perhaps filing for reciprocity in NJ or CT and obtaining a license in those states can broaden your chances without having you go too far from home.

Start inquiring about the names and work info for managers and recruiters and email them directly! Doesn't hurt to try. Join linkedin, there are some directors and managers from NYC hospitals on there, contact them.

There have been lots of posts on here about Nee grads being hired in North Dakota. All the posts have been very positive and people seem to love it. I think they even pay for your relocation

Don't go to north dakota. There isn't anything there. Trust me on this one. But if you really wanna go then do it. Did you look upstate, into the Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam Counties ? There are a bunch of hospitals and perhaps some of them have job openings ? I think NY is perhaps the worst state to be in as far as a new grad goes. There is an over abundance of nursing schools pumping out thousands of new grads a year. The market is tight out there. I'd look north man, I'm from NY originally and worked in both NYC at NYP and at a small hospital near poughkeepsie. PM me - maybe i can point you in the right direction if your unfamiliar with the hospitals up there. Also I'd go and get your NJ and CT licenses. NJ is a bit of a ***** to get, but CT is really easy.

Utah has PLENTY of jobs and is new grad friendly!

Da_Milk_of_Amnesia, what is it like in North Dakota? I was reading some new grad testimonials and they seem to be ok (except for the cheap salary in comparison to NYC)
