Anyone work at Albany Medical Center?

I decided I have to move upstate to find work and want to know if anyone(new grads/old grads) are employed there. What's the environment like? Is the orientation at least sufficient? Do they seem to take in a lot of new grads? Does anyone know when their next orientation is?

I know the pay is low but thats ok.

Any other info about the hospital is fine as well. Just looking for an overall exp.

Thanks

hi i also answered your previous post about bassett, while lookingfor jobs, I also applied here and was offered a position but couldnt take it for personal reasons at that time, anyway the hospital is a good one, it is teaching so alot of residents, plus the albany med school is nearby, it is a more urban area when comparing it to bassett, i heard from many that it is "crisis central" - so u get wide vareirty of experience, starting new grads is 21.00 plus differential, it is bustling with poeple and patients, white coats everywhere, I also shadowed on one of the floors, most of the employees appear to be younger in age below 35 maybe bc they have 9 schools in the area.... I think this is a good hospital, and you will see alot. the people were freindly also, management competent and sincere. HR extremly helpful. positions are open often here as well.

Wow you are a lifesaver! I saw both threads/ posts. Thank you!

u r welcome.

I'm also looking into moving up to Albany and was wondering what the cost of living is up there (rent etc.) I've read what the starting salary is for Albany Medical Center on some forums, and granted I'd just be grateful to get a job as a new graduate in this economy, but the salary just seems ridiculously low. Of course I'm from Long Island where the starting salaries at the surrounding hospitals are generally 75-85k (with BSN and night differential) and yes, the cost of living is higher here, but is it really that much cheaper in the capital region to "justify" that salary? Thanks for your input!!

Hey jad623 , yeah me too I'm from LI and when I saw the starting salary I was like whoa! But we need to work and get the experience so it is what it is.

I found rent up in otsego county to be anywhere from 500-800 and up. So it does work out, other than that costs are kind of low, gas, electricity those are things the owner might cover.

It's ok you will survive up there with that salary and that rent, i can't imagine making that much, living on long island where i am now and paying the rent. Lol

I would have to move into a shelter. Ahahahaha

If you need any more help you can pm me.

Hi everyone. I am a recent new grad. (May 2011) I work at Albany Med...was hired into critical care. It is a wonderful hospital. Large level 1 trauma center, teaching hospital. The medical college is attached. There are a lot of students, residents, fellows, etc...The environment fosters learning, which is so important for us newbies. Everyone (nurses, docs, rrt's) are all willing to teach because that is the hospital's culture. It is an extremely diverse hospital. There are many Filipinos, as the CNO began a recruitment program for bachelor's prepared nurses directly from the Philippines. There are many resources available (vs. the lack thereof in smaller hospitals). For this reason, everyone is truly working as a team. Orientation is very thorough. AMC wants to make sure their new nurses are not only happy, but also fully prepared and trained to be safe/competent nurses. They have just aided a "nurse residency" program for additional support during new nurse's first year. The pay is good for the area. Rent in the Albany area ranges from $600-1000/mo. based on what you're looking for. Albany is cheap. It is nothing like NYC area. If you are not having luck getting a job downstate, definitely visit Albany and consider coming up here. Albany Med is a great hospital to get experience. I have a friend who relocated from Manhattan after not being able to land a hospital job after graduation. The hospital interviewed her over the phone and offered her the job, also offering her the opportunity to come up here, see the area, her unit, and shadow for a couple of hours. They were very accommodating. Good luck!

I was also offered a position at AMC and will be starting next month. I would like to know of areas that are close by the hospital that are nice and safe, where i could rent a 2br apartment. currently i do not have a car and will be working the night shift and sometimes evenings. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks in advance.

Hi, do you mind telling me how you got the job at Albany Medical Center? I am also a new grad, currently living near NYC and would like to get a job at AMC. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I got the job the old fashioned way. I applied for a position on their website and was called in by the unit manager for an interview about a month later. I took the earliest interview date and prepared myself for the interview, and showed up early with a positive attitude. I was offered the position three days later.

I am about to move to the Albany area and will be looking to get a job at Albany Medical Center. I have 5 years of experience in an ICU setting. I also have by BSN. Does anyone know what hourly rate I can expect? Also will I get a more with a BN?

Thanks

Did you have to go to an onsite interview? Or AMC interviewed you over the phone and offer you a position?
