hey everyone!

:nurse:

this is my first thread in this fabulous community of nurses. i first discovered it while studying for the nclex-rn and i'm forever grateful for it because it helped me so much through many times of indescribable:uhoh3: stress and anxiety!

i passed the nclex, thank god:yeah:. but i'm now working on the "getting a job" process. i moved to nyc a year ago and would love to work in a top city hospital to gain solid experience as a new gradute. i'm applying in nyp and mount sinai. i have experience as a nurse intern and extern in a long island hospital. there are a lot of positions posted in radiology, cardiac cath, medicine, oncology, but i dont know which ones are best for me.

what hospitals do you guys recommend in nyc?

what positions are best for a new grad nurse?

if working in nyc how fast and how were you able to find a job?

any tips on resumee, interviews, applying process?

do you think i'll be able to find a job fast? :wink2:

hope to hear responses soon & thank you in advance for your opinions & advices!

things are not too good in nyc first the city hospitals are not hiring, 2nd st. lukes who belongs to beth israel's group are not hiring because long island college hospital closed their labor and delivery unit plus they laid off more nurses so they are going to give priority to those nurses that were laid off to get the jobs. That being said does not leave alot of opptions:(

wow, one of our new grads at BCC was just hired by Lincoln Hospital, 2 went to Jacobi and quite a few to the VA in the Bronx, Try the VA system either 23rd street, brooklyn or the bronx. I don't know what is going on but the new grads from Bronx Community College seemed to have found jobs with no problems.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for your replies.

A little update: I accepted a days position in Mother-Baby (which is my passion) at Lincoln Medical Center. I'm still in the process, but was already medically cleared and waiting to be called back by Human Resources. :)

I had other interviews (even at NYU) but where nights Med Surg, a 8-5pm position OR training, but for me Lincoln was the perfect fit. :)

***Just a note: A great hospital for me is not a hospital thats in Manhattan and serves the upper class. NYP, NYU, and Mount Sinai are great hospitals cause they're advance in technology, medicine, and research (and nursing salary). They are top hospitals in the U.S. News and World Report rankings and/or ANA Magnet Hospitals. Truth be said. I also preferred one of these hospitals because I live in the city and would love to be close to my job, as everyone else.

Also one of the things I LOVE about Lincoln is that it serves the Hispanic community ("under-served"). I'm a Hispanic, so' it feels good to help my people and give back to my community. :)

For all you 'new graduates' the positions are out there, you just have to have faith, go to career fairs, prove they need a great nurse like you, and harass nursing recruiters directly by phone! Don't settle for less. In Lincoln Medical Center, after my second interview, they offered me a night position, and I said NO, thank you. I talked to the nurse recruiter and she told me to think about it and call her again. I called her one week later and she told me they were going to put me on days :).

I'm learning to crawl before I walk! :)

Thanks again :nurse:!!!

I knew NYC health and hospitals were hiring because our new grads from BCC went to both Lincoln and Jacobi, I am doing my clinical at Lincoln this semester, I think you will be happy there, it is really a good hospital with some cutting edge medicine being practiced. BTY if you have students loans you may be eligible for some forgiveness for working for a city hospital check it out.
