For the cranial nerves, I am still working on function, but to remember the names in order, I use what I learned in Anatomy:

On - Olfactory

Old - Optic

Olympus - Oculomotor

Towering - Trochlear

Tops - Trigeminal

A - Abducens

Finn - Facial

And - Acoustic

German - Glossopharyngeal

Viewed - Vagus

Some - Spinal Accessory

Hops - Hypoglossal

This is how I learned in my A&P class, it really helped with memorization.

Oh, Oh, Oh To Touch And Feel Very Green Vegetables AH!

For some reason I lost some of my post in the twilight Zone!

as for function of the cranial nerves, i didn't have a trick, just had to memorize. but my a&p prof gave a pretty good tool for remembering the names:

oh-olfactory

oh-optic

oh-oculomotor

to-trochlear

touch-trigeminal

and-abducens

feel-facial

very-vestibulocochlear

good-glossopharyngeal

very-vagus

ah-accessory and hypoglossal

i guess adding that little bit of naughty was a good way to get it to stick for us! worked for me!!

;)

as for the psych terms, i guess i didn't have anything that worked, because i sure can't remember them now!

This was how I was taught to memorize the function (sensory, motor, or both) of cranial nerves 31 years ago, and I still remember. You need to match this up with the names of the cranial nerves (methods suggested in the prior posts) to better understand the function of each specific nerve.

S=sensory

M=motor

B=both (both sensory & motor)

I can't tell you thank you enough for this post. I saw the other examples

On - Olfactory

Old - Optic

Olympus - Oculomotor.....ect

online and some people in my class even showed the teacher, but as much as I tried, I could not remember the different nerves to save my life. I happened to see your post, and I read it over once, and it was set. I will probably never forget in what order the cranial nerves are in now. I always do better at remembering things if I can make them dirty, lol. Just had to say thank you!!!!
