Failed NCLEX RN twice. It's been 2 years and have to take a refresher course.

Nursing Students NCLEX

Hello everyone I need help. So I graduated an RN in Arizona state 2015. I failed NCLEX-RN twice. In Az after 2 years being out of RN you have to take a refresher course.

Would it be possible to retake NCLEX-RN in another state? Need advice from anyone.

@niorock I read that too but on an older post. I will have to call or look up. I wish someone could give a breakdown that they went through the same situation as me and able to test in another state without taking a refresher course. Thx

@gizahon congrats I see you passed! Im trying to stay positive it's hard but have to. What study materials did you use and how long did you study?

Stay positive and don't give in to the negativity. It's your journey and no one else can fully understand how you feel. That being said, it took me over a year and several times retaking NCLEX to pass. Find what resources work for you. I wish you luck for your future don't give up! There's a reason you went through and passed nursing school. I used Saunders & Hurst for content, and the LaCharity book, Nclex mastery app & UWorld to practice questions. Take the time you need & pray! Everything in its time. I'm proud I didn't give up and I will start my RN position next month in the NICU unit I prayed for! You can do it too!

I went through the same thing(actually i am going still). I graduated a few a years back and took the test and I failed. In my state you just have 3 attempts before needing to take the refresher so instead of dealing with the stress of not having to fail more than twice; I just applied to the NY board and got approved to test really easy. I am still preparing to take the test again.

@knv723 thanks for the encouraging words. I don't know you but I'm happy to hear you passed and there's hope for me too. Congrats on your new job :). I hope my time comes soon. God bless

@niorock you said you applied in NY to retake the board, are you located out of NY? Does that mean you have to take the test in NY or can you take in your state? I would like to know more on how you went about to apply. Sorry for all the questions. Pls in need of guidance here. Any help is appreciated. I wish you all the best. I know we can do this. TIA

Texas you can test unlimited times within 4 years from graduation date. That would be fairly close to your home state I think. Closer than New York at least! Don't give up whatever you do! My husband just passed it after 6 tries. Severe test anxiety (literally almost passed out during one attempt). He was 3 years from graduation date. Many people were naysayers and negative nancies. He's already an LVN thank goodness but the bad attitudes toward repeat testers is pretty sad. You CAN do this!!

Hello @avidhunter3 thank you for the positive feedback. It is really sad sometimes how us repeat test takers are put down. I have read many posts on here just trying to find help. Do you know if I have to go to Texas to take the exam or how is the process?

No need to go outside of your state to test...Once you apply to NY or Texas and they give you the ATT you can take the test in the same place you took it before, the test is the same everywhere, the only difference is that the license will only be valid in NY or Texas so you are going to have a pay a fee to transfer it to your home state

@niorock thank you for this. You have no idea how helpful you are. Btw, I appreciate everyone's input.

Hello LhetzP,

I understand where you are coming from, you are certainly right we all are different and trying to reach a goal, so first and foremost don't give up, yes there are states where you can attempt the nclex without remediation I know NY, HI. For those that chose to rain on your parade with negative comments may have passed the nclex but very well can be one of the worst nurses there is(I've ran into many and they will never admit how many times they actually took the test). Before you attempt the test again, make sure you do questions everyday from the all categories. I used Hurst, Uworld, Saunders, LaCharity, Lippincott so you see there is no one thing that can give you what you need( million dollar industry)alot of money paid out trying to get this done (believe me I know from experience), I found content is everything and thats where I focused most. So keep your head up and stay prayed up and you will pass. Good Luck !!!

So I am a official RN - but it took me 4 years and 2 fails to get it!!!!

I did it with 108 questions

Review course - Definitely!!! - HURST - was my preference AND UWORLD - did I say U WORLD!!!! amazing! Worth every penny

Youtube - watch videos on what labs are needed, anxiety, select all that apply and priority - WICKED IMPORTANT!!!

(Just make sure the videos are current- like 2017) - NCLEX changed 2 x since I graduated!

Good luck - and I took my boards out of state - live in NY - went to VT - but you are given the boards from the state you graduated in -

I even thought that maybe if I took them in an "easier" state - I might pass better- NO

NCLEX asks where you graduate from - so they know what test to give! Plus Pearson Vue has to have your ATT from the state you are got your graduation certificate from

Hope this helps - and if you do a lot of questions, stay focused- you can do anything

p.S. I went to the same testing center as always - just because I knew where it was, what to expect, and felt more comfortable - PSS. - Use the squishy ear plugs they give you and use them as Stress Balls!@@

Good luck
