The last question does not necessarily determine the pass/fail result. Visit the NCLEX Discussion Forum, where we discuss this myth and others surrounding the NCLEX.

Thank you so much for that encouragement. my reviewer in kaplan told me that when you hit 265 questions, your last question matters..if it is above passing or below passing based on the bloom's taxonomy. Is a psych question, analysis?:roll

I've heard several people make similar comments after Kaplan courses, and of course the last question matters (they all matter), but again, the last question is not necessarily the determinant of the pass/fail result.

To pass the NCLEX, you simply have to be above the passing standard. If the computer cuts off before 265, it means that the computer was able to determine with 95% certainty that you were either above or below the passing standard.

So let's say you're going along and after 264 questions, the computer thinks you're above the passing standard, but it is not 95% sure of that. It will give you question 265 (simply because the test won't end early unless it's 95% sure). Even if you miss the last one, you could (and likely will) still end up above the passing standard.

That's why you can't say that the exam result is determined by the result of the last question.
