University of Michigan (UofM) Accelerated program

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi everyone!!! I am new to allnurses.com - I was wondering if anyone has applied for the Fall 2009 accelerated program? I have not been able to attend an information session due to scheduling conflicts. Does anyone know how many people apply to the program or know any "insider" info? I know that 50 people get in every year - I just submited my application last week for the early response deadline - good luck to all!!

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the 2nd career program. I have been reading your posts and wanted to let those of you who have applied know to keep the faith. Last year, admissions said the same thing about decisions being released Jan-Feb time frame. Most of us didn't hear ANYTHING until May and some even after that. They get in no hurry.

That would be awful...I applied for two other programs that start in May, so I don't know what I would do if this is the case.

That would be absolutely ridiculous. I know that they are busy people, but come on. It's only 400 applications. It's not like the 120,000 that I heard general undergrad admissions got last year. If that is truly what happens, it goes beyond unprofessional and begins to border on just plain rude. In addition to people who have applied to other programs, what about those who have to move to Ann Arbor? Sounds like a lot of unnecessary stress.

I was also one that applied to other programs and was accepted. Lucky for me, I would start those after UM started. I know that may people who were accepted to UDM's 2nd career program started there in May 2012 and got their acceptance to UM after they started. They obviously declined UM.

Well I suppose I can look at this in a positive light. If I wind up waitlisted this may actually help me since others may have to decline UM since they'll already have started elsewhere. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Got my decision via email today...I was waitlisted. Does anyone know people who got in off the waitlist? I wonder how many people are on it. I'm not sure if I should cry or be happy I didn't get flat out rejected.

I still haven't heard anything. I'm struggling with whether I should feel encouraged, pessimistic, or neutral about this fact. I do have a few courses that need to be evaluated for transfer so I have assumed I would hear from them needing information for these courses first. Unless, of course, they intend to reject me outright. I have read a lot of other threads and it sounds like there's a decent amount in variability with regards to how many people come off the waitlist. Last year, for instance, sounds like they took a slew people off the waitlist. If I were you, I would feel encouraged. At least there is still a chance, and that is never a bad thing.

I'm trying to stay positive. Although, it seems like the reason lots of people got in off the waitlist last year was that most decisions came super late, so people offered admission had already started elsewhere. If decisions come earlier this year, I'm guessing the waitlisted people won't have as much luck. But, you never know I guess!

I don't know why they just can't all coordinate their pre-reqs. I was also hoping to hear before the refund date so that if I didn't get in I could make this semester a little easier on myself. I called the SON yesterday just to make sure they had all of my supplemental materials and they certainly didn't throw me a bone and give me any kind of indication as to when I could hear from them. A girl in one of my pre-req classes went to one of the recent information sessions and was told pretty much the same timeframe that you heard (late Jan.-early Feb. for the first decisions). Here's hoping.

Different schools have different academic standards and are reflected in the pre-reqs they would like from their students. I was one of the last in the class of 2012 to be admitted. I understand people's frustrations but I will tell you that OSAMS, the department that handles admissions, also handles clinical placements among other things. Admissions is not the only thing they do, so I would encourage you to be patient. In fact, even when you get accepted (think positive), I would encourage you to be patient, because there are many things about this program that will try your patience. Keep plugging away at your classes, volunteer, and enjoy the free time you have with family and friends.

Wow, the 12 month program has now changed to a 16 month program...I am happy because I plan to continue on to my master's. How does everyone else who applied feel about the change?

I don't know if it is a change or whether it is an additional program. The School of Nursing's website has mentioned for the last several months that there may be the option of this particular program in place by fall of 2012. Regardless, I hope I get in :-)

Oh, interesting...the email (did everyone get it?) made it sound like the curriculum changed to 16 months, it didn't sound like an option. I would do the additional app if it's required, but it would be nice to go right in! Fingers crossed for you!

I got the e-mail too. From what the e-mail said and from what they said at the informational session I was at in October, it is a change to the program. The program is now 16 months and they want you to continue into a masters program. This sounds great to me!! Fingers crossed.
