Nursing School Schedules...HELP?

I haven't even taken the entrance exam yet and I'm already stressing out about schedules.

My husband works afternoons. But he's moving to a new plant with all new schedules sometime in late fall; so he has no idea what type of schedule he could be working.

We have three kids, with one of them not quite old enough for kindergarten. My middle child goes to a charter school where there is no busing; we drive her back and forth. My oldest is in high school, doesn't have a driver's license, so she takes a bus.

I attend Baker College of Flint (in case you'd like to know).

So what type of scheduling can I expect? Or if you'd simply like to share your schedule with me, that would be terrific.

When do you start your program? I have 3 kids too around the same age. What are you going to do about daycare? I have never used daycare before and if I get accepted I am going to have to look into this. My oldest will be 15 next year and a freshman, but I dont think he will be able to do all the babysitting.

I have a similar situation... I live in the Clarkston area and we have a local daycare that is open until 11 PM, so that allows for some flexibility. I plan on using this option if I need it

Also, you might look into a part time nanny... My husband and I are both engineers and during launches our schedules were always crazy. We hired a live out nanny, and surprisingly the cost is not that different from day care... this also allows your kids to be a home, in their own beds if you have a late or early shift. Plus a nanny can drive the kids to and from school. I don't think I can post the website we used to find our nanny, but if you message me I will be happy to give you the info ;-) Good Luck!

I plan on starting this fall. As far as daycare goes, I really don't know at this point. My husband is the only one who works and I do not plan on working while in the program. He makes money to pay the bills with a little bit extra left over each week to maybe go visit family/friend. We cannot afford daycare expenses. Using family is not an option because the closest member is at least 40 minutes away.

I just wish I knew what to expect so that I can at least make plans A, B, C, and D.

How do I private message someone?

Two ways (at least!):

1) Hover your cursor over the paper/pencil icon below the member's name. A small identifier should pop up, something like "send a private message."

Click on the icon and fill out, then send.

2) Click on the My Account area, above, and then on Create Message from the drop-down menu. Fill in recipient's name and message and send.

You need only one more post to be able to PM! :)

Clinical (choosen by a lottery system in which you pick the order say 1-4 choices you would like) I had clincal 2 days/wk 7-2. I had a bad lottery number last semester and wound up with afternoon clinicals 3-11pm.

Thanks, that did help. Were you doing a part-time program? I thought most programs were at least 30 hours per week (class time and clinicals); or did I completely misunderstand what I've been told by everyone else?

Hello,

No it was not a part time program. The waiting list was 2 years when I applied so I finished all of my prereqs during that time. I was moved up a year but when I started the actual "nursing program classes" I only had those left. No anatomy or chem or math or anythng else.

3 days a week is common for 2 year nursing programs.

I go to Macomb and our schedule changes every 8 weeks. We are not able to pick classes, as they are assigned to us. We are allowed to "request" a day or night clinical but pretty much no one seems to want night clinicals and I have gotten them twice now (3-11pm 2 days a week). You can try and trade if you want a different one.

So a sample schedule for my last semester:

Monday: Clinical 7:30-2:30, Lecture 4:30-7:30

Tues Clinical 7:30-2:30

Friday Lecture 8-11

(some people had 4 days a week of classes because they have clinical W/Th)

The semester before that it was:

Monday: Lecture 9-12

Tues: Clinical 3-11pm

Wed: Clinical 3-11pm

Thurs: Lecture 9-12pm.

They also add random lab days to our clinicals on occassion with very little notice, but it seems like everyone has kids or jobs or something, and everyone shows up somehow!

I hope that helps though, it really depends on what school you attend I guess.
