MCC nursing applicants for 2015

U.S.A. Michigan

Hello everyone!

I've been obsessively reading over the threads for the 2013 and 2014 applicants, but I thought I'd see if anyone will be applying to the Nursing program at Macomb Community College for 2015. I am a transfer student from Texas and will be taking A&P this summer then intro to Nursing (since MCC requires that you take their specific course) and micro in the Fall. I'm so excited to get back into school and was wondering if anyone is following along the same timeline.

I was actually surprised that there were only around 350 applicants that qualified for ranking in 2014. MCC even decreased the amount of test dates offered for the HESI. I remember the first time I applied there were like 7-800. Implementing the specific pre-reqs really slimmed down the competition and lowered the GPA ranking. Way back in 08/09 MCC took the most recent 12 credits so everyone had a 4.0. Now it's an even playing field and everyone in your group must bust their butt to compete.

My goal when I went into the HESI was to get nothing less than 90%, so I was thrilled when I saw the 92.332. It was pretty cool! Take 5 min at the beginning of your exam to do some deep breathing and calm down. You are very well educated folks and your hard work will pay off. You have plenty of time to complete the exam so do not rush. I'm very slow at my exams and I had, I think, like 45 min. left. If you feel fatigued or anxious just stop, look away from the screen for a minute, regroup, and move on.

This is the beginning of your journey!

If you haven't yet, start looking at RN to BSN programs. I am still short some classes and wish I would've considered my options a little sooner to cram in math & chem before I started the program. While I did get some classes in, I should have focused on those two more than anything. Many of you younger students already have the math and chem skills and/or the time to take them before you start the RN program. I'll get there eventually.

Holler if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for your input! Do you think that the hesi study guide book helps? Also when did you begin studying for the HESI before you took the exam? A lot of people tell me that the study book is a lot different from what is actually on the exam, and it makes me so much more anxious :( Did the math part have story problems or was it just basic stuff? Again thank you so much!

The HESI study guide definitely prepared me for the exam. Having my A&P and micro completed also helped.

I would say I actively studied a couple of hours per day for about 4-6 weeks before the exam.

The math is what I feared the most. Practice, practice, practice. The more problems you do, the better your recall. Of course I've already forgotten how to do those darn fractions. Knowing there was no algebra on the exam eased my anxiety. There were story problems and household measurements, but they were very basic and easy to work out. Just take your time and do not let your emotions get the best of you.

The study guide is the only source I used to prepare for subjects. If I did not understand a concept, I would look it up or find a video to clarify. Make sure you understand each concept presented and keep it basic.

I personally did not find the study guide helpful in the vocabulary, maybe 5 words for my exam. You never know which words they'll pick, so study it! The exam seemed more like general knowledge to me.

I took the HESI 3 times over the years. 89%, 87%, and 92%. The first 2 times were back when there were 1000 applicants and everyone had to have a 4.0 and a 99 to get in. I was an alternate and chose physical therapy assistant instead. It's a rewarding but physical career.

- Remember, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Find your weakness and work on that.

- Watch nursing test taking strategies videos to help ease anxiety and teach you some ideas on how to decipher the questions.

Practice and master what is in the HESI book and you can go in confident that you are prepared!

Study on!

Hello everyone! I just happened to be reminded about all nurses.com and decided to read up on everyone's threads! I started the nursing program at MCC August 2013 and I graduate this May.

I got in with a 90 HESI and a 3.9 GPA( ranked 52 because I know someone will ask?)

The absolute most important thing is getting a good score on your hesi. The only study aide you need is the hesi exam book offered in the bookstore for about 25 dollars.

Someone asked about working during the program. 32 hours would be extremely hard unless you were doing 16 hour shifts. The program is 4 days a week and between 25-35 hours depending on which rotation you are in. I currently work as a nurse assistant and I do two 12s on the weekends. Even just working 24 is hard so that would be the most I could recommend.

I'll check back on this so if anyone has any questions just ask. Best of luck to everyone!

Hello everyone, I am also applying this year. I am excited about the whole process and bit anxious. I take the hesi in January so as soon as my Micro class ends I will be studying for that.

hi bayliedynell, I was just wondering did you have to have a bp cuff for the program?

What gpa is everyone applying with? I will be at a 3.61, I got a B in a&p and A in everything else

Hello everyone, I just found this thread and I'm looking into applying for the 2015 Nursing program. I don't have the highest gpa but I am hoping to do well on the HESI exam to make up for that. I will be done with all pre reqs dec 18th and cannot wait to be done! I'm so anxious to apply :)

Good luck! What classes are you currently taking?

I could not agree more about wanting this semester to be done with! I have Micro right now and if everything goes well I should be applying with a 4.0 and I am taking the hesi on Jan 8

Thanks! I'm taking A&P and Micro.

WOW A&P and Micro together, that is a hard work load!
