Hello all,

I just complete week 1 of my clinicals at a LTC.

I'm working with a seasoned CNA and for the most part it's been great. However when it comes to personal care especially peri-care. I get sushed out of the room by a couple of the residents. While I'm all for residents rights; it's getting differcult to get the experience nessessary.

I do think I've gained the trust of one of the residents but a couple of the others have drawn a line in the sand to so to speak.

Any ideas or comments?

You'll get plenty of practice cleaning people up later on. Look at their refusal as a temporary reprieve.

Enjoy it while you can and respect their wishes, first and foremost, the patient's rights come first. Respect the patient and they will respect you, communicate with them, once they get to know you things may change, but for now enjoy finding a female to do the "dirty work"...after all, patient's rights come first, just don't over do it as an excuse.

I am concerned by their refusal I won't get the necessary clinical experience.

I have another week of clinicals in the same location hopefully I will gained the trust of the little old ladies.

I did get picky eater to actually almost everything on her plate. The Dining room CNA told me it's due to her liking men.

Heck! I admire your concern over not gaining custodial experience in (as it is oft termed) "wiping butts"!

As Basho was reputed to have said, "Follow not in the footsteps of the wise, but seek what they sought."

I don't know if quoting Basho has anything to do with anything, but the statement looked real good there.

Don't worry about it. Worry is a needless expenditure of energy. Your day will come when you have gained the necessary experience in order to provide hygienic measures for urinary and bowel inctinency to female clients with skill and self-assuredness.

Peace be with you.

Experience will find you, grasshopper... I thought the same thing, too, but did get the clinical experience I needed. The instructor was aware that I wasn't getting the skills needed (i.e. cath care/insertion) and just had to prove I could do the skill in skills lab. Good luck!

There was just a ruling re; this in a LTC facility on the East Coast, the NAC won a judgement against the LTC facility. He claimed it was discrimination that he as a male couldn't care for a female resident-even though it was her request. The judge agreed with the NAC and the lawsuit was in his favor. The judge stated "resident rights don't over-rule discrimination". We had to go through mandatory training with our risk managment company for this because they say it is the newest addition to the discrimination rules. If a lawyer can file it-it will happen.

Get the experience where they will let you and don't sweat the rest.

Even in my last quarter of school, my preceptor made sure I knew what I was doing, then let me skip out on other experiences. And she *always* asked the pt if it was okay if I help (assuming pt consciousness).

Even now that I am an RN, I still ask a pt if s/he will be okay with me doing the work.

I just got my CNA lic. over the summer, When we did clinicals at a nursing home, I had the same situation, they would grab there briefs and growl,,and I would be like, I'll just guard the door,,and let the lead CNA (a woman) take over.

I've had similar situations during my clinical experience in LTC. I had a few little old ladies that refused to have a man washing them up. But, I feel like I had more luck when I went into the situation without apprehension. If you walk into the room and start getting the bath stuff ready, etc without asking, "do you mind if I wash you up?" "would you rather a woman instead?"...but instead start out with "I will be helping you with your bath today" ... you'll find you have better success without putting the idea in their head that they have the option of having a female vs male wash them up.

You should also find that some of the women will not care. I've found that there have been many who are not shy at all and are not private about anything at all. But don't get discouraged, you'll get the experience along the way!
