LPN Jobs/Rate of Pay

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello everyone.

I currently live in the state of Florida. I will be graduating from an LPN program in May. I plan on taking my boards here and then moving to either NH or MA. Basically I am going to be a brand new LPN right out of school and curious as to what job opportunities there are for LPN's in either state. Florida is always hiring LPN's, but i've heard that mostly RN positions are available up north. I've also heard that LPN's have more job limitations in MA...can anyone tell me what the practical nurse is able to do?

I am also wondering what the starting pay rates would be for a brand new practical nurse. I need to know a general estimate so I can plan my budget and figure out what rent, etc I can afford.

Thanks to all who answer!!!:)

Not sure about gaining employment in NH as an LPN.....but here in massachusetts, hospitals don't hire LPNs anymore (to my knowledge).......but they start out pretty good in nursing homes, etc. I think the starting pay for an LPN in one of these facilities is probably around 18-20/hr.........although in my RN program there were a couple of LPNs working for an agency making 25/hr .......Good Luck!

I will advise you to go to NH.....it's true MA doesn't hire LPNs.

I just recently became and RN from LPN. In Mass. LPN's in LTC can make $22-$25/hr not including diffs/OT etc. Rehab LPN's can make $18-20. I have not looked into office/clinic but I believe it's somewhere in between those. The VA also hires LPN's and is around the $19ish mark. Depends on if you're looking for experience or money. If you have experience there's also homecare / agency.

Most LPNs in a non long term care type hospital, work in psych units and or occasionally regular hospitals in Transitional Care Units (Nursing homes within the hospital) and in the nurseries. Other LPNs have just been there for ever.

UMass Memorial hires LPN on their med/surg floors, and Metrowest Framingham and Natick also hire LPn, there are 3 LPN's on the Med/surg floor at leonard Morse Natick. There are definately still positions for LPN's in hospitals, you just need to inquire with human resources.

I heard from a direct source at Metrowest Natick that LPNs are being phased out (shoved out) the door.

it's true that LPN's in the north are being phased out of hospitals. I think the nursing home route is the probably way to go. However they do have some nursing homes that will pay for you to pursue your RN license. So you could get the experience while still going to school to get an RN license. Just a tought. :)
