Accepted: Simmons Dix Scholar Nursing Program!!!

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello everyone!

I'm new posting on this site but I have been around reading other peoples comments.

I wanted to start a thread for students that have been accepted to the Simmons nursing program entering fall 2012 as well as students that have attended and graduated from this program.

Please leave any comments, I am eager to read what everyone has to say.

Here is a bit about my self:

This will be my first degree, I attend Roxbury Community College and will receive my AS in Health Science by the end of the summer (while working full-time). It sure has not been an easy task. I had my back up plan, with the competitiveness of nursing programs I never imagined that I would get accepted to any school in Boston. Needless to say, my excitement has not been easy to contain and I smile to myself every time I think about what awaits for me in the near future.

I did get my TCE already - I got it before I got my decision. I am not thrilled by how extensive the science pre-reqs are at Simmons, but I will just be busy this summer 1 session getting them done! :) I am waiting to hear from Regis (which is close to where I live) and NEU. The only thing about those programs is that they are direct entry, not just accelerated BSN, so if I get in anywhere else, I will have quite a choice to make.

I should be there on the 3rd, see you there?

I'm not sure if the 3rd is for Dix scholars undergrad or for everyone. None the less, I will be there. I'm still waiting for my award letter. Simmons is my first choice but I do not see the numbers I want, I will go to UMass Boston.

Just found out I was accepted to the Dix Scholars Program starting in the summer... I'm trying to decide between Simmons (doing an accelerated BSN) and MGH (the NP program)... not sure what to do!

Ally1451,

Congrats!!! Those are both huge accomplishments. How long did you have to wait to get into the program?

Thank you! I'm definitely excited about both and really thankful to have the option to choose a program. I found out about MGH around the first week of March I think and just found out today about Simmons. I applied late to Simmons, so it took awhile to find out. It's just tough to decide whether I want to do the accelerated bachelor's track and then work for a little while before applying to an NP program or just go straight through the NP program (at MGH). Lots of decisions to make in a short amount of time! Simmons is having a registration day Tuesday and I've already sent my deposit into MGH...

I say go for the highest achievement. Since you already sent your deposit. Follow your heart for NP.

Ally - I have to agree with MrsFocused. I got into Dix, but NP is definitely my ultimate goal, so I am waiting to send the deposit in until I hear back from some other places first (NEU and Regis). MGH is a very good school (2 of my co-workers graduated from the direct entry program)!! Congrats on your acceptance to both :)

Congrats Ally! If you have questions about the Simmons side of the equation or about DE programs in general, give a shout.

Do you know if one can transfer into the DE program from the Dix ABSN at any point?

Remember also that DE NP programs are going to push you to do the second half part time while you work, so whether you do 18-months and reapply or go straight through, its similar. Typically the BSN classes are cheaper than DE classes, and you get a BSN on your trip through. DEs (at least at Simmons) do not get BSNs.

You have to apply to the BSN to MSN part of the program from Dix but lots of people do it.

Thanks so much for all of your advice. You do actually receive a BSN at MGH but not until the end of the program. I do agree with wanting to work while in the program, and I think they do encourage it. So many decisions :) I really appreciate all of the comments though it helps talking things through in my head and with other people on here!

There were a few cases in my cohort where people would have liked to take their BSN and walk halfway through (they ended up jumping through hoops to transition from DE to Dix). That being said, I am sure that's why programs don't offer it till the end! It doesn't effect everyone (though it's hard to get a interview at Boston hospitals without a BSN, even with a previous BA/BS).
