Accepted: Simmons Dix Scholar Nursing Program!!!

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hello everyone!

I'm new posting on this site but I have been around reading other peoples comments.

I wanted to start a thread for students that have been accepted to the Simmons nursing program entering fall 2012 as well as students that have attended and graduated from this program.

Please leave any comments, I am eager to read what everyone has to say.

Here is a bit about my self:

This will be my first degree, I attend Roxbury Community College and will receive my AS in Health Science by the end of the summer (while working full-time). It sure has not been an easy task. I had my back up plan, with the competitiveness of nursing programs I never imagined that I would get accepted to any school in Boston. Needless to say, my excitement has not been easy to contain and I smile to myself every time I think about what awaits for me in the near future.

Ally - I have to agree with MrsFocused. I got into Dix, but NP is definitely my ultimate goal, so I am waiting to send the deposit in until I hear back from some other places first (NEU and Regis). MGH is a very good school (2 of my co-workers graduated from the direct entry program)!! Congrats on your acceptance to both :)

Thanks so much jrwinney! It really helps to hear people's opinions who are going through the same thing! Good luck with Northeastern and Regis! I'm actually on the waitlist at both of those as well :)

Jazzyjazz, I understand out the Dix program would be perfect for you but how can you be a candidate for Umass when a prior BS degree is required?? Are you talking about the traditional BSN and not the accelerated??

Yes, traditional. This will be my first degree. I have made up mind and decided to with Simmons. :)

Hi,

I’m applying now to the BSN for summer 2013. Any tips on applying?

I have a BA in two majors Art History and Jewish studies with a 3.7 GPA and just started my prerequisites. I got a C in college my first semester. Do you think this will affect my chances of getting in? I also have done hardly any work in healthcare, I volunteered at a hospital about 4 years ago. Should I start doing some other interning or volunteer work in healthcare to up my chances? HELP! I’m nervous about getting in.

Jazzyjazz.. congrats on making a decision.. I know it's tough! I'm currently still waiting to hear back from Simmons.. When you got your acceptance letter did they tell you exactly how much the program will cost (just tuition). I'm trying to forecast!

This is sort of a late response, but can I ask any of you who got into the Dix Scholars what your cumulative GPA and prerequisite GPA were? I am looking to apply for next year's round. I have a 3.59 undergraduate GPA (majored in Biology) and have about a 3.6 prerequisite GPA.

Also, what else did you add to your application? Volunteer work? Experiences?

I am a Hospice volunteer, but don't know if I should be doing more.

Thanks!

Hello all, I was just accepted to the Simmons Dix 18 month program but am still waiting to receive everything in the mail.. Can someone tell me exactly how much the program costs tuition wise? I don't need to know room and board or living expenses.. Just the actual cost of the program. I calculated it from the website to be around $55,000. Is this accurate? The 18 month program has the same amount of nursing course credits so it should be the same cost as the two year program.. Thanks!

Congrats to everyone!!!

I'm actually doing a major career change. I currently work in the IT field and my resume only has technical support as my experience. I have volunteered in the past and will continue to do so while in the nursing program, right now I am a mentor for the Big Sister program. My GPA is 3.8 with my sciences being a 4.0. I do believe that they look at everything. Just make sure that you mention your volunteer work in your resume as well as your essay. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Since I am a Dix scholar, they basically charge me by credit but in the end it averages out to be the same as paying for tuition per term. I know that just tuition is 36k per year, however, for Dix scholar it depends on how many courses. I am in the two year program and will plan to take all the required (Fall/Spring) courses, this will run about 24k (just tuition + fees)

I was doing some research yesterday and found the following additional cost:

Uniforms - $150

Transportation - $150 This depends on your transportation method

Equipment (stethoscope/watch) - $200

Books - $500 (my financial aid adviser suggested that we calculate $40 per credit)

National Student Nurse Association - $35 per year

Cory Check - $30 per check

Remember about the loan origination fee (yearly) and the student activities fee. Also, health insurance if you don't have it!

Thanks guys! Jazzy I responded to your PM but it doesn't show in sent messages so I'm not sure if you got it. What's the transportation fee? Is that a special pass for the T or something? I'm planning on driving in to the city so I'll be paying for a parking pass. De- what's the loan origination fee? Never heard of that. How much is the other fee you mentioned? Thankfully, I already have health insurance.
