UMB FALL 2011

U.S.A. Maryland

I will be applying for the Fall 2011 program at UMB really really soon. I was wondering if anyone else was doing the same...? I'm really nervous about applying because Anatomy really kicked my butt last semester and I ended up getting a C (even though I ended up doing really well on my other science courses). Now, I'm losing hope. Anyone feeling the same?

3 more weeks is going to go by painfully slowly...

I know it... I can't wait to find out!

I know it is so hard to wait, but I have a couple of suggestions. There is a BSN-CNL Open House on Saturday, April 5 on main campus in Baltimore. If you have yet to visit that campus it would be a great day to do that as there are lab tours and presentations from our leadership. Prospective students who are deciding between the BSN and CNL programs should definitely attend it. Then you could walk down to the Inner Harbor for lunch or something. If you would like to visit the Shady Grove campus, you can do that any time except during spring break, or you can do the virtual tour on the Universities at Shady Grove website: http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu.

If you are done with all your prerequisite courses, you would do yourself a big favor if you do a serious review of your Anatomy and Physiology course books and notes. If you don't have your books any more you might try to find some used ones and brush up. And then there are lots of medical terminology sites on the internet - that would also be a good use of your time.

If you can get some or more healthcare experience, volunteer or paid, between now and when classes start that would both be good for you and, in the case that you don't make it into the fall class, it will beef up your resume for a spring application. (The deadline is September 1 for spring.) And for another way to get yourself ready would be to view this article right here on allnurses.com: https://allnurses.com/nursing-articles/how-survive-thrive-532725.html I have had several students and grads review it and they all said it is spot on.

Finally, the admissions people will attempt to reach you by phone as well as send an acceptance letter. You might want to make sure that the phone number you listed on your application is the one you want them to try. Ditto for your email address.

Hang in there!

Thanks for the great advice. I'm going to try and focus my attention on making sure I get A's in my last classes I am taking now. It's still going to be a long wait though :-)

So they are going to be making phone calls to let you know if you are in? I know from reading past threads that they did that when they got a little behind on sending out the letters; but does this mean that phone calls are going to be a regular thing now to let people know they are in? (likewise, should we expect to get a phone call if we are in before we see our status change online?)

Thanks again!

Can't wait .....

i found out the first week of march that i was not accepted. i needed my decision early, because i was doing a nursing commissioning program for the air force. i will reapply for the spring semester. good luck to everyone!

Wait... Toiyac- you already found out you weren't accepted to umb? I'm sorry that must be disappointing. Did you request your decision early? And how did you find out you were not accepted, did you get a letter?

I'm sorry for the questions, i'm just surprised because no one else has heard anything yet, you'd be the first.

Yes, I found out early. On my application I stated I was military, and UMB knew I was applying to the nursing program for the Air Force and that I needed my decision before April. When I called I spoke with the assistant director, and she told me I was not accepted and I also received an email, and a letter in the mail a week later. Yes I am disappointed, but I will try again in the spring and also I will apply to other schools as well...

I asked how could I make my application my competitive, but did not receive an answer. My overall GPA is 3.4, my science gpa is 3.7, and my TEAS score is 76%. I am in the process of volunteering at the hospital on base, that is something I lacked....

OMG, now I am almost hopeless

Hope you get accepted next semester.

Hi Abby...don't freak out just yet. There are a lot of things that go into the UMB application process (essay, letters of recommendation, resume/CV); you don't know what the reason is that someone else wasn't accepted this time around. It seems that UMB really looks at a lot of different factors when considering who to admit. Try not to worry too much, and if you are truly set on starting school in the fall, maybe see if there are a few other schools that you can apply to. Keep your head up until you actually receive word on your application. :o

Hi Toiyac...I am sorry you didn't get in. I am applying to NECP this year as well (are you doing NECP or AECP, I assumed AECP since NECP only allows fall starts?). I was accepted to NECP last year but was not accepted to either of the two nursing schools that I applied to. It was really heartbreaking to tell the Air Force that I couldn't take their NECP offer. But I am re-applying this year and hoping I will be as lucky. While UMB is my number one choice, I have also been accepted to University of Missouri, St. Louis. I hope you applied to a few schools as well if you are applying to NECP, that way you still have a chance for this year. Either way, good luck to you and I am sorry that UMB didn't work out for you this year.
