When someone mocks you for being a nurse

I just had a really ****** night where I was mocked for going to school to be a nurse. I can't explain how frustrated and ******* ****** off I get when people mock me for my decision to be a nurse and make a positive difference in people's lives. I feel like so many people think nurses just put band aides on people's fingers. I hate this and just needed somewhere to vent, people are idiots, if there weren't nurses the healthcare system would collapse faster than a ******* popped balloon.

Don't even let it bother you. Just be confident in who you are and the profession you have chosen. Those who mock are usually ignorant and know little about what nurses actually do. A lot of my friends gave me crap for going to nursing school but now I am the one about to graduate with a BSN with a great job and bright future ahead while most of them either A) Got some random degree and can't find a job or B) didn't graduate and still live off their parents with no real future. Oh and they hate when we are out at bars and all the girls love talking to me about wanting to go to nursing school and think its awesome that I will be a nurse. Let them talk ****, it doesn't bother me at all. "Haters gonna hate Brah"

If you want to get cocky and get back at them, all you have to say is:

a) Yeah? Well, I probably make more money than you, and my job will never be outsourced, nor will I ever have a hard time finding one myself.

b) I got to help deliver a baby today (substitute that with something else meaningful if you want). What was the high point of your job today? Not quite baby-delivery-epic? I don't think so.

c) Girls, girls, girls. Need I say more?

I appreciate the responses, I really do need to be the higher person

.... JUST .... PUNCH them in the face

And then when they are on the floor oozing teeth, blood and other bodily fluids BET they will be very thankful that there is a trained nursing professional in the house.

and yeah as someone already pointed out you dont get a better guy to girl ratio in any Uni program than with Nursing. Basically the opposite of total sausagefest that Engineering is. Maybe they were Engineering majors and just bitter? that would explain it

There honestly needs to be more make nurses ! And most women find it fantastically attractive

People are dumb. End of story.

I shrug my shoulders and say "sorry I had the initiative and planning to make a positive change in my career path, and

I'm happy with my decision. I feel like I'm doing good work and have contributed positively to society. I did ___ and the patient and family really appreciated it. Now about that retail/office/___ job you keep complaining about...) "

(Caveat: I think people in retail are doing important and necessary jobs. I worked many such jobs myself. But, if people are dumb enough to open up their mouths in such a rude and ignorant manner, I'm going to respond accordingly).

They sound uneducated...just feel sorry for them about that!

My advice to you develop thick skin. As a nurse at times you may be put down, comfronted from management, doctors, peers and family members. The public perception of nursing is developed thru advertisements, and life experiences. Advertisement usually has nurses holding someone's hands as if caring , touching, is all nursing is. The other perception is when a love one ,or themselves are hospitalized depending on the care they perceive it becomes their reality.

Some patients do not understand that you are caring for a district a workload of patients.

For instance my district last week was 8 patients and I had a very needy client on top of three ventilator dependent patients.

Enjoy the respect you earn from the people who see for your hard work and dedication.

Just speak in nursing lingo. That will really make them go cross-eyed and mouth agape.

And don't fret. Everyone who is anyone who has worked in the health care system or is a nurse (or soon to be nurse) knows how hard we work, what our title entails, and how much it took to get there. Not to mention, the life changing qualities we have that sets us apart from the rest.

But good thing we have a place like this forum to rant and let it all out! Not to mention, a supportive community to pick you right up and reassure you that even though you're a nurse, you're still human too.
