In your opinion, what are the views of woman as more man go into the nursing profession. Do you fell welcomed? Do you feel they enjoy male presence in the floor?

How do you feel?

depends, but those that have a prob with it aren't getting their way, ha.

i don't c it at a real prob.

As a male I havent seen any sign that they care one way or the other at my job although as a student I did face a lot of discrimination from female nurses.

That's the thing i don't get why do they discriminate while your in school, but when you got the job it is a whole different ball game?

It's realy simple. While in school your always under the microscope. Being a guy and getting into nursing is a little unusual so we stand out.

It is true that we stand out and our presence is noticed!

However, I can genuinely say that my life as an RN on the telemetry unit at my facility has been very enjoyable and not at all related to my gender. I am still precepting, but my assignments run the gamut of age, gender and illness. There is another male RN on the unit and we get along very well. We joke about the doubling of the testosterone factor on the floor! I think that most nurses would worry more about the abilities of any nurse with whom they work instead of something minor, such as gender. Just my take on my experience...

Part of the reason is because I did some of my clinicals in a place called Victorville. If you have been there you would understand why. I now work in an area where people, in general, are more sophisticated and have more experience dealing with other cultures. At this point, I really dont think any of my coworkers care whether I am a male or female. To us it is a non-issue.

Most def! Welcome male nurses! We need you!

I think that 99% of the time it isn't about gender. I believe it is more about personality and how likeable we are; we just want to blame gender instead of looking at ourselves. Nobody likes to look at their character defects, so we make excuses.

Also there are people, not just womwen, that don't like anybody.

It is easy to get caught up in scenarios as well e.g. preceptor comes to work, her teenage daughter is pregnant, husband is fooling around, and the dog has worms. She is not going to be the nicest person to be around...........

Please don't think that I am going soft or making excuses for the fairer sex as I am a card carrying member of the He-Man Woman Haters Club!!! After all, they are just a bunch of icky girls.............. :D

Some of my instructors have gone out of their way to welcome the male students and have commented more than once that it's good to have men on the floor.

I find all these comments really interesting. I've just been accepted to start a BSN program in January, and there's another whole thread on this website about whether there is any pro-male-for-sake-of-diversity going on in NS admissions.

My new RN boss is a guy. Note to ladies: Guys don't do pinky swears. Clarify your secret hand shake. We do this knuckle bump thing -- a dab.
