Intersted in Nursing , not sure if I could

Been thinking about maybe going to college for nursing . There is a program here sponced by the michigan works that would pay for people to go to college for nurising. The problem is not sure about the math partof it . Not good in math or chemestry and biology and anatomy seems realy hard. And not sure if I would be smart enough to be a nurse or be a good nurse.

Any advice or infomation that would help me ?

Just go back to school take it one day at a time. You are still pretty young, I had a man in his 50's attempting nursing after not being in school for YEARS (since he was in the philipines) ..Know what? He was the ONLY student getting an A in A&P II.. I was jealous when he got into the nursing program, but I knew deep down inside he would make a terrific nurse.

Take some classes, remedial math will do WONDERS if you committ to it.

I am truly the worlds worst math person. I can't comprehend the ambiguity. That said, I had no problems with drug calculations. Learn a system and use it always.

I am another one who was not born to love or even understand a lot of math. Chemistry either....

As another poster said, if nursing is what you want, go for it!

You usually have to take several of those courses to get into NS, so just plug along at mastering each prerequisite math and chemistry course, and before you know it, it'll all be behind you.

One day at a time...the only way to learn geometry....I can't tell you how to figure the rectangle area....but I can do a drip/minute calculation almost entirely in my head. Find a system that works, and stick to it!

Don't doubt your ability to be a nurse!! YOU CAN DO IT! We need more guys out there in hospitals...too much Estrogen presently.

Besides the first year of Nursing school is info that you already learned as a Nurse Aid.

I think alot of people are put off by the profession because of the overwhelming complexity of diseases/meds. It is tough, dont get me wrong but I know exactly what you are feeling and thinking. I put off the decision for 8 yrs because of self-doubt. Trust me, by the end of Nursing school you will be so glad you decided to do it.

It's in your heart. Follow it. You will be an AWESOME nurse!!

I'm sorry to be the realist but if you have problems with the abstract sciences- math and chemistry and the more concrete sciences- biology and anatomy perhaps nursing isn't the field for you. I guess the best first step is to enrole in school ant start your prerequisites. You will know soon enough if you can handle a nursing program. If you have problems with freshman math and sciences in may be best to look elswhere for a career. Who knows?, you may be grossly underestimating your abilities. You may find aptitudes you never knew you had or that you have developed since high school.

just take your pre-reqs. that'll give you a good indication of if you're cut out for nursing. if you struggle with the pre-reqs, nursing school will be even harder. but you won't know unless you try. the whole point of pre-reqs is to give nursing programs a good indication of who will be able to hack it and who won't. nursing does require a decent amount of science and isn't necessarily for everyone. if you're attracted to the patient care aspect but can't handle the sciences, there are many other areas of healthcare which can be just as rewarding. best of luck in your studies!

You never know unless you try. One thing I've learned over the past 11 years is: if you avoid something because you don't *think* you can do it, it's almost always a mistake.

That being said, back when I was 18 years old and first went to college, I was a nursing major. I flunked out of my two core sciences A&P and Chem. My nursing advisor told me that I should change majors because nursing school is competitive. Honestly, back then, I don't even think I had a clue what I was getting myself into....I wasn't ready for nursing.

So, I changed my major, retook my sciences and passed them. Graduated with a degree in Kinesiology (in preparation to become a physical therapist). Once I started working in the hospital setting, I slowly learned I really did want to be a nurse, bringing me to this point. I had to retake almost all of my prereqs because they were "expired"...ended up with a 3.9 cumulative GPA and 4.0 A&P GPA and I was just accepted to nursing school to start in January 2009!

If you don't think you can do it, try it anyway....if it still doesn't work and you really want it, keep trying.

A female weighing in here....

a) I agree; we need more males in the profession to counterbalance the estrogen!!

b) I don't know how far back you're going with the assumption that you're not good in math or chem, but I had avoided the sciences ALL my life. Always took the bare minimum to get my bachelor's in business. When I started taking prereqs for nursing, one at a time, I was acing my courses. Math? My high school grades were straight "D"s!! My college grades after beginning with Basic Math through Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra? Straight "A"s through to College Algebra.

c) I just graduated with some nursing students who were borderline students in nursing school, several of whom had to repeat semesters, but a couple who will be darned great nurses.

I think it's about the desire to succeed and willingness to do whatever it takes if you want something bad enough. Perhaps see if you can set up a shadow in a nearby hospital to spend some time with a nurse (maybe even a male nurse) to see what you think and if you get the "burn".
