BSN to take Nclex LVN

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Can anyone tell me if having a BSN qualifies me to also take the Nclex LVN and if so, I already have my credentials with the BON California, do I still have to submit one for the BOVN?

You have to submit an application to take the NCLEX PN. Graduation from the BSN program should suffice. Just list it on the application as you would any LVN program.

Uh....why don't you want to take the NCLEX RN test? Just wondering.

I took the Nclex RN exams last Feb but did not make it. I am still planning to take it again but a friend suggested that taking the Nclex LVN would also be a good option to consider. Reason for that is that even if I pass the Nclex RN exams, it is currently difficult to get a job as an RN because most hospitals and facilities now require or prefer to have at least 1 year work experience. Having 2 licenses just increases your chances of landing a job sooner eventhough the pay for an LVN is about 30% less.

Does anyone know if you can request the BON to send your credentials (i.e. transcripts and clinical credits) to the BOVN or do you have to do it yourself?

Has anyone done it... Took the Nclex RN first then decided to also take Nclex LVN? Please share the process of application. Thanks to all!

They will not send anything anywhere for you. If you want to take the NCLEX PN, you will have to submit a separate application with separate documentation.

I don't know the rules for California but many states have moved (or are moving) away from allowing this and require LPN/LVNs to graduate from an approved LPN/LVN program. I know CA allows LPN/LVNs to challenge the RN exam so it seems like they would allow a BSN grad to challenge the LPN/LVN exam but I'd suggest contacting the BON for LPN/LVNs to be certain.

How is it that an LPN/VN could challenge the RN exam if they haven't gone thru an RN program? Just curious.

LVN jobs in Cali are just as hard if not harder to find than RN positions!!!! I would tell you to study and try to take your NCLEX- RN again! A lot of people take it more than once. You not only have an RN license but a BSN!!! I think giving up after one attempt is a little weak! If you can graduate from a BSN program you should have no problem passing the NCLEX-RN

The CA RN application has a box to check if one is a nongraduate of a nursing program. The board would decide if enough of a program (say 80% of a BSN program) had been completed to be equivalent to the minimum required for an RN program for licensure. Not many people would qualify under this provision because not many programs would set their programs up so that this option is available. My program used to sign off on the application if a student had completed 75% of the program, then they stopped that practice and stated that the entire BSN program had to be completed.

This is very inaccurate information. California does not allow LVNs to challenge the boards to become an RN. In fact, no state in the union allows LPNs/LVNs to challenge the boards to become an RN at this time. The only way to become an RN is to complete a program that is approved by one's state board of nursing.

California allows CNAs, medics, and certain other healthcare workers to challenge the boards to become LVNs, but nobody can challenge to become an RN.

I am not giving up the Nclex RN exam, I plan to take it again in Jul-Aug. I just sent my re-apply form last week and hopefully will get my ATT early June. I am just giving the Nclex LVN some serious consideration and maybe I can hit two birds with one stone so to speak during my review. Some LVN's here such as visiting lvn's make as much as a starter nurse ($30-35/visit) and it may be easier to get work/assignments compared to applying for a rn position in a hospital or while waiting to be hired as an rn.
