So which area of nursing do you hope & would you like to go into?

Which type of setting, or hospital floor would you like to work on if hospital work is your choice, etc...

My plan is to work my way up to RN & I'd love, love, love to be an E.R. nurse. :)

I want to be a psychiatric nurse, but who knows, I may discover something I like better during clinicals.

I would like to do just general med surg because you never know, in this market it's so hard to find a job as a nurse unless you have general med surg experience. When you are a generalist you can work just about anywhere, but if you specialize it gets even harder.

I agree with you. My nursing instructor told us he wants all of his grads to work Med/Surg for two years before specializing because it is a great foundation. I plan on following his advice and then, hopefully, psychiatric nursing. However, I'm keeping my mind open to other areas as well. I didn't think I would like LTC, but was pleasantly surprised to find I loved it. So who knows what else I'll discover this year!

i don't know what area of the country you guys are in, but most lpn's do ltc & hh here, the hospitals either don't hire lpn's or have very very few lpn spots.

I'm going for my RN so therefore there are opportunities in the hospital for me once I graduate as long as new grad positions are open. Right now I'm a LVN in a clinic. I have no idea where I made it clear that I'm a LVN wishing to work as a LVN in the hospital.

Yes, I believe you can do so much in general med surg. As Jolle stated you can get a great foundation there, which is true. You never really know if you're going to like a place until you experience it. A friend of mine wanted to strictly do labor, when we did our rotation there SHE HATED IT! After we were able to rotate down to cardiology and observe there she absolutely loved it!!! Now she wants to specialize in cardiology once she finishes her RN.

Postpartum or L/D would be my top choice if I worked in a hospital. ER is very interesting, but I don't know if I could keep up with the pace.

Outside of the hospital, I'm starting to be very interested in wound care and LTC.

ER! I'm interested in a lot of different things, but ER looks like it might be good for me. I want to get into a residency in a NYC hospital. I have a lot of time between now and then though.

I want to go into Cardiac ICU. I found that the cardiovascular system completely amazes me, and given my personality I need to be in a unit that constantly challenges me - I think cardiac ICU fits the bill!

I just completed an AP2 exam that covered the cardiovascular/lymphoid system, and I scored 100!!! :) It is quite remarkable how well you do on exams that cover subject areas of interest to you, no matter how challenging the topic may be.

Anyone else find this area of interest?

I hoping to work in Med/Surg or CCU while I go for my RN license.. I eventually want to venture into becoming a CRNA because I like the challenge of it. In order to even think about getting into a program for CRNA I have to have a year of CCU and Med/Surg.

Hey, a trying newbie here. lol.

It is meant to be in general nursing student discussions. I apologize.

Though, I've personally been thinking of the LPN route myself and working as such more in the areas they're most hired in for a period of time while going for my RN. Actually still not sure which route I'm going here yet between those two. I know my ultimate goal with my education is RN.

I think my ultimate career goal is to work in an ER, though I have seen other nursing students say the same & find out shortly after it wasn't the thing for them, but I've always dreamed of working in urgent care in the medical field.

How can one have such a range as I have, such as considering a doctor's office or clinic to work as an LPN or an RN in an ER? :lol2: I feel I was just born to be a nurse, and who knows, maybe enjoy & dabble in many or a few different areas of the field.

Interestingly enough as well, I've done the math on an LPN making $20 an hour, working 8-5, 5 days a week in a physician's office, clinic or other (A starting rate I've seen & heard frequently for my area), and the math on an RN making $25 an hour, working 3 12's in a hospital (also a starting rate for my area, both based on estimations). LPN'S are actually listed @ $22 hr & RN's at $27 for the Boston area), and both came out to an exact $900 weekly. :rolleyes:
