Nursing & Pre-Nursing Students - Desired Area of Nursing?

So which area of nursing do you hope & would you like to go into?

Which type of setting, or hospital floor would you like to work on if hospital work is your choice, etc...

My plan is to work my way up to RN & I'd love, love, love to be an E.R. nurse. :)

You?

Then there's the option of home health care as well. I feel I could really enjoy that too.

Might have to judge what area I truly want to start out in or end up in through my nursing school experiences, clinicals, etc.

I want to go into Cardiac ICU. I found that the cardiovascular system completely amazes me, and given my personality I need to be in a unit that constantly challenges me - I think cardiac ICU fits the bill!

I just completed an AP2 exam that covered the cardiovascular/lymphoid system, and I scored 100!!! :) It is quite remarkable how well you do on exams that cover subject areas of interest to you, no matter how challenging the topic may be.

Anyone else find this area of interest?

That's what I want to do too! I either want to do Cardiac, regular ICU or the Cardiac ICU (mainly this one). Those units are so intersting! I love the ICU because I feel like those nurses really know their stuff. There is a lot of patient care and family support that goes along with it. Also, you don't care for as many patients and you can stay with the same ones for awhile. This way you can really get to know their needs. It's also great because you can develop a relationship with the family and really keep them informed so they don't feel like they are continually being passed off or avoided.

Congrats on the test! When do you plan on applying to nursing school?

For those who want to do ICU, CCU, or any speciality like that and want to go on for their CRNA, do you know of any schools that allow you do do that online? Clinicals obviously have to be done at a facility, but the theory portion is what I'm wondering about?

Thanks! I've already applied and just been accepted to a diploma RN program for Fall'10! Clinical starts the first week of the program and we will be placed on one floor for an entire semester. I just hope to be placed on the cardiac floor before graduation! Unfortunately, we do not get to choose. If we did, I'd request to be placed there towards the end of the program so I could be more helpful, and get more out of the experience.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

Either Psych or Geriatrics....I love them both.

Specializes in (Hopefully one day..) neuro/urology ^.^.

I definitely think I'm going to do Med/Surg my first

few years I'd possible..I've heard so many good things about doing that first then going into specialty.

But, after that?

My first choice would be neuro.

2nd urology/dialysis. (people make fun me for this, but I find the kidneys and that entire system fascinating. Give me nephrons or give me death!) (ok, that was lame, I know!)

well, those two would be my top picks but I also think I'd be open to psychiatry

who knows. I just wanna get the program done with haha

So far your the only other person besides me that will do Psychiatry i was going to take the program for that if i have to its 3sems. People make fun of me for wanting to take that rout but i just need the LVN to hold me over to see what i grow to like you never know what part of the hospital you'll end up in just being an LVN but good luck

Specializes in n/a.

i can see myself working in the hospital in the er/trauma department, as an rn. if i cant get that i wouldnt mind working in the gynocology dept.:lol2:

first choice ER

second choice ICU (CRNA someday?)

I have 2 questions to ask, please help...

1. Can an LVN student get to choose their "desired area of nursing" too or it's just for RN level and above that?? I'm planning to go to LVN school next year.

2. Can someone please give me all the names so I can choose from because now I have no idea which one I want to go into.

I am a CNA but my ultimate goal is to be an RN:).

Thx!!!

It all depends on the area that you're in. Most areas don't utilize LVN/LPNs to their fullest. There are some that still hire and utilize LVN/LPNs to their fullest. If you work in a hospital where LVN/LPNs carry on a full assignment the areas that they can chose from are: ICU, L & D, Postpartum, Oncology, Ortho, Renal, ER, OR, Step Down, Diagnotics, and ER. Some hospitals have post partum and L & D together and bigger hosptials might have subcategories within the major categories. For example our hospital has Orthopedics, and neurology seperate but I've worked at other hospitals that have them together. It just all depends.

Thank You Very Much NurseCubanitaRN2b:). Now that I know all the names I can take my time to do some research about it and choose which area I'm interested going into. And yes my goal is to work in the hospital as an LVN in the future. Thx again for your help!!!!
