Doing LPN program and working advice

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hi everyone. I start a part time LPN program this September and even though I'm very excited I'm nervous at the same time. I work about 30 to 33 hours per week (midnight to 6am shifts Tuesday into Saturday), I know that working and doing school is rough (I worked during college), my body is adjusted to working midnights and the job I do is security and actually doesnt require much of me and I can study at work. I'm just mostly looking for tips from others that have done a nursing program and worked at the same time. I know it will be worth it in the end and its going to be tough but I'm still nervous about it all. Any tips, advice and words of encouragement???:crying2:

I wish you luck. I work 35 hours a week for the first 8 months of LPN school. However, as the end got and is getting closer I had to cut back on work hours. Actually today is my last day at my job and I plan to be working no more then 24 hours a week. Some people can work full time all the way to the end. I couldn't. I didn't handle the stress well. I found myself depressed, stressed, and having anxiety not because of NS but because of doing BOTH. Now I feel free, knowing that my last 8 weeks of LPN school will be dedicated to mainly school and work will come later.

Learn good time management and get into a good exercise regime. This is what saved me from LPN school AND dealing with my mother's cancer diagnosis (in the first semester no less!). I worked almost full time in the beginning but at the end I cut down to fifteen hours or so a week. Just like the poster above, there were a few girls who could work full time and go to school full time but they really did sacrifice life and were very stressed. Mercifully my teacher didn't get too ****** at me sleeping in class. I was sixth in my class. You must count the costs. Stress ages you and contributes to disease.

Hi Larien37 I also start in September as well a part time LPN program 3 nights a week from 4 t0 830 ( not too bad) but I am also nervous because I work 40 hours and then I work every sunday and every other sat as well !! I am hoping I can do this my program is really stretched out it is intended for those who must work and is a 2 year program how is yours set up?? just curious. I have heard many stories of those who were successful at working ft and school pt as well as some who needed to cut back hours and all but I am not gonna stress too much because as school goes along if I need to cut back hours I will do so!! I wish you luck!!!!

I'm planning on working PT while in school FT. Well, school is 8 - 3 Tuesday through Friday. Hoping to work about 20 hours a week. I hope I can find something "easy" like your security job. Good luck to you!

I do consider myself lucky to have a job that allows me the chance to study, although the nervousness of working midnights and going to school still scares me. I think also since I have about 8 years of criminal justice behind me also so for 8 years nothing but law has been pounded into my head and now I'm going into a totally different career field. Its a little overwhelming to think about. I wish everyone luck thats working and going to school, we just have to think about how much its worth to us.:yeah:

Hey ladies I was just reading and decided to give my story:nuke:. Honestly I was in a part time LPN program and worked full time at a hospital pharmacy 40 hours and week and had clinicals every other weekend and the other weekend I had to work and having my 4 year old daugter full time also..After my first semester the anxiety attacks hit hard:eek: landed me in the hospital missed so many days of clinical that I failed the clinical:sniff: and now have to repeat it(the clinical only) before I can get to my second quarter even though I passed all my classes with straight A's:yeah:.It hurt me but my body couldn't take it anymore I kept going but my body let me know that it had enough:sstrs:.So I decided to take the last semester off to recouperate and just work and guess what I recently found out I am being laid off:bluecry1: and to me it seems like a blessing in disguise:saint: so I am now enrolled in the full time day program and will be done by march 2010:yeah: now I can just focus on school I am very happy about this because it turns out that my union 1199 and the hospital is merging to pay my unemployment and I still get 85% of my check which is amazing and I still get to keep my health benefits and finish school faster. So if you can ladies try to best to maintain good health and preserve your sanity:onbch:.I know it is impossible to say today not to work because everyone has to live especially with this economy, but if you have the option not to work then I would go that route. Good luck ladies everyone keep us posted!:stdnrsrck:

I was ready to quit at the end. The anxiety got really bad and my teachers actually though something physically was wrong. They made me go and get a lyme's disease test. The lasy day of school I was sick of books and studying and the cattiness in class! I felt that graduating AND passing my NCLEX was a major victory. I did it my way. I drank wine, ate chocolate, exercised and had lots and lots of s-e-x the night before and passed at 85 questions. All you guys working with kids, etc. will brag just as much when you're done with the hellhole that is LPN school *LOL*
