Major dilemma- can anyone help?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Starting next week I will start sending my resume out, as I will be eligible for the NCLEX as of December 19th.

However, a lot of the places around where I live won't hire Graduate Practical Nurses. They hire you in as an aide until you take, and pass, your state boards.

I don't want to do this. I ONLY want to work as a nurse. I feel that I have worked as an aide for 6 years now, and I have not busted my behind to become a nurse only to get done with school to go back (even for a few short weeks) to work as an aide.

On top of that, I have a real problem with working as an equal with other aides, only to be placed as their supervisor a few weeks later. I have seen this happen before, and within 3 weeks of becoming a nurse, the girl quit because the team she previously worked with as an equal treated her heinously as a supervisor. (Jealousy perhaps?)

Am I being too high on the hog here and thinking too highly of myself, or should I just take what's offered and keep my mouth shut?

Wait to apply until you've passed.

And you will.

:)

That is a no can do.

I have not worked in over a year, and I have to start work immediately upon graduation. I'm afraid my husband will leave me if I dont! :) He has put up with a lot over the last year or so.

I am totally 100% confident I will pass the NCLEX; I just need to work before I do so.

If you are offered a great position to work as a nurse, I would take whatever is offered and suck it up knowing it will be what you want!

I work nights and I HATE IT! But I know I will work hard and get into days eventually!

Best of luck!

I'd wait until I actually had a nursing license in my possession before I started submitting applications for nursing jobs. It's my personal opinion that applying for jobs an entire 3 months before you're even eligible to take NCLEX is jumping the gun, but that's just me. I personally didn't apply for any LPN/LVN positions until I had the license, because that was one less reason for any hiring manager to turn me away.

If you really need the money, you'll probably need to work as an aide or tech until you pass NCLEX since GPNs (graduate practical nurses) are not hired routinely in your area.

What about working agency as a CNA? Good money and you don't have to stay at one place if you don't like it. Then once you pass your board test you can start applying.

Just a thought. Good luck! :specs:

I'm with you on this one. Unless I were actually applying as a GPN, I would not feel comfortable placing applications for a nursing position. Yes, we all place positive energy into NCLEX, and I wish the best for everyone. However, unfortunately, I have seen an occasional fluke. And, again, just me, if you do take the position, don't mention to the CNAs that you will be taking it. I am a firm believer in energy affecting people, and you don't need the additional stress.

Best wishes on your exam!
