LVN in L&D?-vent-help

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I live in Southern California, LA county,.

I am considering starting an LVN program. I REALLY want to work with moms, I am a doula and CBE. Ideally L&D but i'd take Post partum too. I am on a time crunch as we only have medical insurance for about 30 more months and my husband has multiple illnesses.

So i really need to get some insurance for us in the next few years.

On top of it all I feel OLD! I have a previous degree in biology that no one will count towards anything because it is more than 10 yrs old. no prereqs not GE nothing!

Is there anyplace that would hire an lvn for L&D ? I have NO desire to take care of the elderly etc...

What's an avg pay rate for an LVN here?

I saw a job opening for an OB aide or tech. What's that? Does that have insurance usually?

Thanks, I'm sort of at wits end here and I need to make some icky decisions.

I was born and raised in Southern California, and attended Casa Loma College's (Van Nuys) LVN program from Oct. 2004 to Oct. 2005.

The truth is that you will need your RN license if you ever want to work in L&D. Kaiser Hospital employs some LVNs to work on their postpartum units, but never L&D. You will have difficulties in finding a southern California hospital that is willing to hire LVNs onto their L&D units.

I'm in Kansas, but that is my experience as well, that most places don't even hire LPNs for post partum. I worked in an independent birthing center for 4 years, doing L/D/mother/baby; but I couldn't get a job doing mother baby at our local hospital. RNs only. Maybe an independent birthing center with CNMs would be an option; technically ours only hired LPNs, but I had a strong medical floor background and had worked for years as a doula and childbirth/breastfeeding educator, so they hired me anyway.

What about an OB tech position? You scrub in on c-sections and work on the floor as an aide. It has insurance. I am in the midwest and we have techs here--you go through a 6 month program for that. Also LPNs work in the newborn nurseries here. GL!
