How is it determined how long a license lasts?

Nurses LPN/LVN

I haven't taken my NCLEX yet, but I've had friends who have, and their licenses all expire at different times, I was just wondering how that was determined. One friend took her NCLEX in January of this year and her license expires in May of next year, and another friend took her NCLEX at the end of January and had her license issued the first week of February and yet, her license will expire in November of this year. Another friend took her NCLEX just last Monday and had her license issued a couple days later and her license expires in September of next year.

This is all in Texas, if that matters, and all LVN/LPNs.

Nurses who are licensed in Texas have licensure expiration dates that are determined by their dates of birth.

For instance, my birth month is February and my birth year is 1981. My Texas license is due for renewal on the last day of February every two years. In case you are curious, I recently renewed my license. It will be active until February 2017, then I need to renew again.

Nurses who were born during even-numbered years (1982, 1990, etc) renew at the end of their birth month every two years on even-numbered years (2016, 2018, etc). Nurses like me who were born during odd-numbered years (1981, 1993, etc) renew at the end of their birth month every two years on odd-numbered years only (2015, 2017, etc).

Oh ok, thanks! That makes a lot of sense. So my birthday is in August of 1990, when I pass my NCLEX, I guess that means it will expire at the end of August next year.

In Ga all LPN licenses expire every 2 yrs in March. RN licenses expire every 2 yrs in January.

The OP is correct.

The OP was born in August during an even-numbered year (1990). She is correct in saying that her license will expire in August 2016. Her license will be due for renewal at the end of August every two years during even-numbered years (8/2016, 8/2018, etc).

I have also been licensed in Texas my entire nursing career. I was born in February during an odd-numbered year, so I renew at the end of February during odd-numbered years every two years.

I received my initial Texas LVN licensure in March 2006, but had to renew eleven months later in February 2007 due to the basis on which the Texas BON conducts renewals. My RN license was issued in May 2010, but I was required to renew nine months later in February 2011, then every two years thereafter (2013, 2015, etc).

Depending on the date a nurse's initial Texas nursing licensure was issued, the first license renewal is often due before a full two years has elapsed.
