Can I PLEASE SCREAM....

Nurses LPN/LVN

OK guys, I need some support here. Im an LPN (have about 9 months left before I finished Excelsior Colleges RN program---it couldnt come sooner!) and moved to Arizona in January. Well, in July we finally decided that I was going to job search. Well----here comes the screaming. Out here, all they staff is MAs. And the HUGE health system out here states that they are weeding out the LPNs---the ones currently employed are either remaining employed until they receive their RN or are "retiring". I ask the recruiter if they can fill a MA position with an LPN--Im not asking for any more $$---at this point I just need a JOB. The specific position in question is the exact same thing that I did for 2 years as an LPN. She tells me that Im no longer being considered for the position because its "outside of my scope of practice". I would have accepted it if they said that I was overqualified and they wanted to give MAs a chance. But the lady apparently isnt understanding---what is there that an MA can do that I cant, that makes it out of my scope??? Im not getting it....then she states that just like hiring an RN in an LPN position....I know plenty of people that had an RN license and remained in their position as LPNs---or had to switch to the floor they wanted to work on as an LPN before an RN position opened up---again what is there that an LPN can do that an RN cant??? Im pretty sure---NOTHING...OK, enough with my venting but Im just REALLY over this...please send me some calming words of wisdom...anyone else out there in this position???

It is economic. They don't have to explain to an MA why they are paying MA wages.

I think this "screaming" just worked in my favor---as soon as I posted this---I found a job listing for Pediatric Home Health Nurses---willing to train. I have orientation on Monday and will train me for trachs and all the things that I WANT experience on but have just never got the chance. Cross your fingers for me...hopefully this works out and I LOVE it...

Don't worry, you will soon have lot's of RN company as the industry moves to replace RN's at the bedside as well.

MA's can draw blood and do billing.I feel your frustration and am once again contemplating trying to come up with the money to do excelsior.

Thats insane! Although there are differences in the scopes of RNs and LPNs, I dont see what would make an LPN unqualified to do the job of a MA? If I was a pt ...I would absolutely refuse to let an MA draw my blood! I wouldnt settle for anything less than a licensed nurse...RN or Lpn...wouldnt matter to me as long as they were a real nurse.

Have you looked into them lately? I go through them as well--only have 2 exams left with them actually. Then CPNE (Clinical). Starting at the beginning of July, they did a new payment plan thing. It includes the enrollment fee, exam fees, and practice exams, I believe. It would be worth looking into, if you can get the exams done in a timely manner. Good luck!
