Starting at Galen...tuition question

U.S.A. Kentucky

Published

I am starting at Galen in October and plan to do the two year program. I was told that if I sign a contract with certain hospitals agreeing to work for them after i graduate they will pay for part of my tuition. Has anyone done this or recommend this? I have researched it some and I know that Norton, Baptist, and Jewish all have things like this but with different stipulations. I don't want to feel like I am stuck somewhere. Also, I am not sure whether or not I would already have to be an employee at some of these hospitals in order to sign the tuition contract. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about or am I just rambling. lol. Thanks.

I'm in group B. I believe group A has Learning Lab on Tuesdays and clinical on Thursday where Group B is the other way around.

Parking:

We can't park in the garage unless its after 5 or something.

Don't park in the fire lanes... you'll get ticketed and/or towed.

Don't Park on the grass... you will get towed.

Don't park in the circle in front of the hotel.

Don't park behind the hotel facing the hotel.

It sounds difficult but it really isn't.

You can park in front of the school and the sides of the parking lot.

You can park behing the hotel facing away from in (I think towards tennis courts or something like that).

You can park in front of the hotel.

Ok. Coolness.

Yesterday was the first day of class and now I am afraid that I am not going to have one day to go out and have fun. My instructors pretty much scared me yesterday. Boo.

Specializes in none yet!.

I'm thinking about starting there in July. I'm scared to death! How was your first day? Did you like the instructors?

The first day was fine. All we did was go over the syllabus and ask questions. The instructors seem pretty nice and laid back, but also were honest about the course load. It is a very welcoming environment and I feel comfortable there.

There is a large demographic when it comes to the students. A lot of people have children or are changing jobs due to the economy and some are straight out of high school.

I am a little worried about the work load but I figure they are going to scare us a little bit so we don't skip class and do stupid things like get too far behind. I know it is going to be stresssful at times and expected it to be. Luckily though I am one of the few without children and/or working so I just keep telling myself if these guys can do it I can too!

Have you toured the campus or anything?

Specializes in none yet!.

Yes, I took a tour last week. I was thoroughly impressed with the Zorn campus, especially the lab. How much reading/homework has been assigned this week?

I do have a child at home, and am wondering what kind of workload I can expect.

I really appreciate your responses!

Yesterday was only my first day and today I had off (even though Galen closed due to weather) so no homework so far. One instructor did say the first two weeks will be pretty laid back as far as assignments/studying goes. It is a lot of work though without a doubt, some people just catch on faster than others. We had a student talk to us during orientation and we were able to ask him questions and he said its by no means easy and not everyone makes it. And like I said the instructors were pretty honest about the stress level as well but people are doing it... with kids and jobs!

As long as you have support from family and friends I am sure you would be fine. The only thing I would really want to think about is a back up plan if your child gets sick/ day care. The attendance policy is really strict from what I understand.

My start date has been changed to April. One good thing to do is go to Galen's website and from there you can download the student catalog and handbook. It should help you learn more if you have not already read them.

Why did they push you back again?

Why did they push you back again?

Actually, it is not a case of being pushed back again. I was initially told that I was to start in October, but the person who told me that was incorrect. I was to start in January.

A recent mutual decision was made that the best start time for me would be in April as to not do a disservice to myself or to set myself up for possible failure. No big deal. Just doing what is best.

Well that is good. It would stink to pay all that money and then not be able to do you're best. There is a girl who was a last minute "acceptee" and she still had to get her paperwork and immu's done. You could tell she was not focused and worried.

Are we allowed to use PDA's in clinical? I know we can't use our phones on the floor but what about when filling out care plans and stuff?
