US SS # and licensure by endorsement

Hi!

I am a registered nurse from philippines and have passed the California NCLEX-RN. However, my license will not been issued until I secured a valid US SS no. I haven't get one and my exam will expire soon.

I am planning to apply for licensure by endorsement in other states which doesn't require SSS number.

In this case, will California still issue me a permanent RN license after the expiry date which is 3 years after the date printed in the passing letter I received from California state board of RN since I already acquired a permanent license in other state by endorsement.

thanks. I'm working in my country now as a nurse. I recently passed the NCLEX under CA licensure application and my visa screen is on the process. I've got an employment contract with one of the hospitals in Texas but I'm not sure if I should sign it.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Currently there isn't much rush to sign the contract due to retrogression. Make sure you understand the contract and any cancellation fees this thread might help https://allnurses.com/forums/f75/contracts-please-read-before-signing-one-212797.html

i'm in thesame situation with rockerlover. Im also a recent NCLEX passer and my state is California.Im considering applying to New York, So if apply through examination, do i have to take the exam again? What other states can u recommend that i apply and do not require an SSN before they give my license?

@dennisacob, I called the Texas BON and I was told that I don't need to take the exam again to be endorsed. They only require the exam result/letter coming from the CA BON. This will serve as a verification of my passing. A payment of $150 is also needed to process the application. They will then issue the license.

so rockerlover, have u already applied for texas? what are the steps? did u apply for "licensure for examination"? i hope u have a friendster or whtaver so i coould contact you... im really clueless..

Once you take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam for one of the BONs, and are licensed- you never have to take the NCLEX-RN exam again to endorse your license to any other state. The licensing exam is waived, however, other requirements must be met as required by the BON.

If you have already passed the exam, and have a license- you will not use the licensure by examination application form. You will have to find the Licensure by Endorsement fom, and send the documents mentioned.

I am not sure, but I think Texas requires CES.

Why do you want to apply in new york for licensure by examination? Once you have passed the examination for one BON, you will not be eligible for licensure by examination in another state. You will not be required to take the exam again.

NY requires a Credentials verification Service from CGFNS. For details about how to proceed with CVS- visit the CGFNS website at www.cgfns.org.

Not sure which state do or do not require SSN.

tnx starbin. i think i understand now.. Since i dont have a license, and obviously CAli doesn't give one if you do not have an SS#, i think i will use licensure by examination application form by the state on which i am going to transfer or whatever terms they use? am i right suzzane? hehe. i hope u answer..

No, even if you do not have a valid license number (you have passed the exam), based on the results that you have passed the NCLEX-RN already, you will have to use the Licensure by Endorsement Form. Leave the license # area blank or just write NCLEX-RN passed- results attached, and send a copy of your results along with the application (remember that this does not replace the original licensure verification/results verification from the BON that you passed the NCLEX).

For more updated information, contact the BON itself.

All the best.:typing

If one does not have a license that has been issued to them, such as for the state of CA; then they are unable to endorse as no license is issued without the SSN#. And without that, they must use the License by Examination application and then they just have the state, such as CA, send in verification of passing to the new state. That is the only way to do it since they cannot endorse if no license number.

All that have gone thru CA or any other state that does not issue a license without a SSN# has to use the License by Examination application. No other way to do it.

Probably things changed over time. When I first did my application in 2005, I didn't have SSN. I also went through CA, and just got a letter saying that I passed. I was CGFNS certified. I sent an endorsement application to NJ (they required SSN and CGFNS certificate at that time), they asked me to send them a copy of my passport, and a letter from the Social security office stating the reason why I didn't have the SSN. My not having the license in CA wasn't even an issue. I had sent the license verification form and the fee to CABON, left the license # blank. I got my NJ license even before I was issued a license from CA (I sent my SSN to CA once I got the EAD, then they sent me the license).

I was giving the advise based on my experience, but probably it is outdated.

That is no longer the case, and really you got lucky back then as you did not have the CA license so you cannot endorse something if you do not have a license number that is issued to you. You were just lucky that they were not picky for you, but in fact you did use the License by Examination process since CA sent in verification for you of passing of the exam. You also had the CGFNS Certificate, and that made a difference as well; but still you were applying for License by Examination then as well.

Every BON has gotten pickier in what they will accept, if there is no license number issued, then the License by Endorsement just does not happen.

There is not much difference in the applications at all, but without the actual license number, one cannot endorse. CA is still sending in the proof so that makes it the examination application.

Thanks for your understanding on this.
