Filipino nurses as nurse aides only

Ouch - that seems like a slap in the face, especially *after* the NCLEX! In the UK, Filipino nurses can work as auxiliaries until they complete an 'adaptation' period when they get their PIN numbers and can practice as registered nurses. I had to do an adaptation since I was a graduate when I left Oz, and the 2 Filipino nurses I worked with as auxiliaries were both nursing lecturers at home - they'd been practising nursing as long as I'd been alive. Language and cultural differences aside, surely once foreign nurses have proven their competence and safety, they should be allowed to practice? Otherwise, what is the point of the whole process? If you're not allowed to be a nurse after the exam then why allow them to sit at all?

*confused* I really hope it's not true.

No, its not true. I actually started my orientation at the hospital with several Fillipino nurses who had just come to the states to work at this hospital. There are to be 25 of them in total at year's end. There may possibly be a longer orientation period for you at the hospital you are going to work at, but as far as only being a Nurse's aide...that's ridiculous.

By the way, the administration is so pleased to have hired nurses from the Fillipines that they are hosting a "Lunch and Learn" session about the culture and history of Fillipinos! :) I'm going tomarrow.

No way!If you're a licensed RN you practice as an RN. I've worked with many Filipino nurses in all areas. Good luck!

I work with a number of Fillipinos trained nurses who are working as RNs in this country.

In the distant past I ran across a couple who were CNAs here but nurses in the Fillipines. While others were working as RNs here.

I do not know why some were RNs and some were CNAs and they all were nurses there.

Maybe it is a language thing or a matter of passing NCLEX. I am guessing it is passing NCLEX.

I have a friend from Germany who is an RN there, but is only allowed to practice as an aide here. Kind of makes me wonder....

All I know is, the hospital system with whom I am employed is bringing over a bunch of nurses from the Phillipines to assuage the shortage/crisis and they are being brought in as RN's, NOT aides. These folks are all RN's and all have bachelor degrees, from what I have learned. They pass the NCLEX, they come in as practicing nurses, just like the rest of us. That is how it's working. Where did you hear this RN as aides information?

I work with 3 or 4 Phillipino nurses, and they are the most professional colleagues I have met in a very long time.

I agree with Agnus...the only foreign trained nurses I see working as aides here in the US are those who cannot pass NCLEX. They work as aides while waiting to retest.
