I'm hopefully due to qualify soon, if I manage to pass the last 2 assignments & get my portfolio in order. I really want a buckle when I qualify which I know no-one seems to wear anymore, I just wondered if anyone knows where you get them from.

I got mine from a jewellry shop they had a few in a case. In 1 was is a shame not to see them anymore but gather was a health and safety issue although I always took mine off when moving patients

I am sure you can still get them in shops, I know you can get them on line.

Huge Health and Safety issues - with all those buckles around in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s it's a wonder that the NHS didn't have financial collapse from litigant patients with skin tears

Just a thought though....surely, the wearing of a tunic and belt/buckle is a major fashion faux pas - non? It just looks immensely silly.

I've thought long and hard about a response to this. I haven't got one!

But it doesn't make any sense does it? When nurses wore 'dresses' the belt (and aforementioned lethal buckle) did what it what supposed to do to draw the dress in at the waist. Wearing a uniform/dress without a belt looked awful. Wearing a tunic and a belt is pointless.

I am now off to put on one of Belinda's old belts on with one of my tunics - I could be setting a new trend for male nurses everywhere. Although, I won't be going any further with other items of her clothing even though it's the weekend and she's in work.

Oh Cleverclogs-- Old style UK nurses had these belts around their waists with big, shiny belt buckles. Kind of like a military stable belt. I have pictures of my Mum in hers.

I always thought they had something to do with the hospital that did the training, kind of like our nursing school pins? But I am probaby wrong.

Now if you really need a laugh, somebody might be kind enough to post a few old time UK nurses. The variety of caps/hats, and white sleeve cuffs, along with the belts in amazing. My Mums hat was a white frilly thing that she must have steristriped onto her head:p

Thank you Anna this link brought back many memories This how I looked when I first started nursing in the UK

I think they are studnet nurses because they are not wearing buckles as that was something you got once you became registered.
