:o I am new to homecare. I am scared of the day I will change a wound vac and have baby roaches scatter. My main problem is I am afraid I will scream and jump back like the boogie man just got me. :o I haven't told anyone at work about this yet. LOL

If you scream and jump back that is just the way it goes. You have as much right to your reaction to the roaches as the client has to have a roach population. I would not be concerned about it.

LOL, thanks for the response. I keep hearing these horror stories about infested houses.

Well little roachies are out there, even in the best of homes. They are industrious and prolific little critters! :chair:

And if you live in Florida, they fly, too!

Roaches I am definitely not fond of..but exposing a wound and finding hundreds of maggots...now THAT got to me!!!

I screamed and kicked a basin full of medication bottles away from me when a spider skittered out while I was filling a med planner. I then proceeded to lift my feet off the floor and insist that someone kill the spider. Luckily it was a long time pt and she got a huge kick out of my fear!

I worked in a house that had the worst roach infestation I have ever seen. I worked nights so if was worse. I would keep the room light on all night. The parents would try to make me turn it off but I explained it scared the roaches. It's hh so I reminded myself it could always be worse. Of course going to the bathroom was an adventure.

Keep bug spray in your car. I had a hoarder pt with many, many cats, no litter box, really gross. I got flea bites all over my legs. I started spraying my pants, shoes, socks, car floor carpet, gas, brake, clutch pedals. Never got a flea infestation but after every visit I was itchy all over, LOL.

Ants, spiders and perhaps even maggots I could cope with but roaches gross me out so much I would probably bring a minimum amount of supplies in hermetically sealed bags and change clothes in my car before going into my house as yes - the damn things haven't been around since the dinosaurs because they're not clever enough to hitch a ride and stay well hidden . . .:barf01:

As far as screaming and jumping back goes, not proud to say it but I did it! -- when I observed something gross and quite unexpected in a bathroom sink. It's like a reflex. The caregiver I was with thought it was pretty funny!!!

Oh my gosh, I couldn't deal with it! I work on a surgical PCU and last night I went into my patient's room and his room was crawling with roaches!!! He had his wheelchair from home in his room and they were crawling out of that. I saw them, immediately walked out of the room, and never went back (i let another nurse take over his care) and I had a panic attack in the bathroom. Can't deal with roaches, its a MAJOR phobia.
