HIPPO Violations

Nurses HIPAA

Published

i just saw an article on foxnews.com, and right down at the bottom, it mentioned that something was blah blah required by law...due to it being a hippa requirement.

ugh. can't blame them, though, when even registered nurses on this forum regularly post about their own hungry hungry hippo violations.

the irs list of americans who renounced their citizenship is required by law, in accordance with the health insurance portability and accountability act (hippa) of 1996, the site explains. this listing contains the name of each individual giving up his or her united states citizenship.

please, nurses. don't enable the hippos. lead by example.

Administrators and educators who do that make me feel unsettled. One of those things that just shouldn't happen, along with calling a cap a "hat". ﹌﹌shudder﹌

In the years I've been out of healthcare, I've been working as a freelance web designer. One of my clients sells HIS, EMR/EHR, and other medical software. One add on they offer is HIPAA training for hospitals and clinics. Imagine my surprise when the copy they send me for use on content pages says HIPPA Every. Single. Time.

Call me crazy, but when you are positioning yourselves as "experts" on the topic, you should maybe spell it correctly!! Grrr

If someone could identify a point of "Accountability", I might be bothered. It has made nothing "Portable", nor is there, "Accountability". Call it Viagra For Corporate Healthcare Attorneys, and I'll ride the bandwagon...

I was looking through the online P&P folders on my hospital's intranet last night, and there it was: The HIPPA folder.

Frowny face.

And here I was, sucked into this thread because I was wondering who was insane enough to violate Hippos!!! Then again, after reading about the HIPAA (and noting how many people have misspelled that over the years), maybe I have concluded that someone's hippo needed to be gored?

The PORTABLE part is requiring COBRA insurance to be offered when you leave your employer. HIPAA covers a pretty wide range when you look at all of it.

It really didn't help when the clinic I was attending had a big poster expousing to get ready for the institution of "HIPPA" complete with dancing hippo. I bet they never get it right there.

Many many moons ago, I was taught it was HIPPA...the acronym for:

Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act. Thus, the 2 p's in HIPPA.

Just a few short yrs. later (& after having this permanently memorized)...the acronym changed to HIPAA for: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

ARGGGHHH!!! It took me awhile to forget that first acronym.

Maybe that's why there's still some confusion?!

Well, I hope she was wearing a tutu or a bow, because a HIPPA - is the girl. I just read a very informative article that contained a history and timeline of the whole HIPAA thing. It was very useful and used the correct acronym thoughout, but they couldn't resist using this as the accompanying picture ..

. arrrrghhhh! Mixed messages! 968471.gif

There was an awesome HIPAA joke on pinterest that I wanted to pin, but it was spelled HIPPA. So disappointing...

Hope this is better:

I had difficulty on a practicum and spent valuable time on a question where I was asked to "access" something shown in a photo. Took me a while to figure out that the instructor meant to "assess" it.

The Portability part also refers to the fact that if you changed jobs, your new employer got a notice that you had had health insurance, and your coverage did not lapse or have a wait time even if the new employer only offers coverage by a different carrier.

The Accountability part has to do with who will be accountable for maintaining patient privacy regarding private health information (PHI).

The actual 1996 law never had "Privacy" in its title. The version you learned was someone's assumption because all they think about is the privacy aspect and they had to get it in there. :)
