Nurses Stress 101

Published

As a soon to be RN I have thought a lot about how to handle the everyday stress of being a nurse. I know that each and every person has a different way of handling things and I am looking for some new ways to manage stress. so my question what do you do to manage your stress?

I don't work full-time and I work for myself. That covers a lot of stressors right there

:wacky:

(but sometimes the boss can be a real b****).

I don't work full-time, so I am immune to most forms of stress.

Otherwise, I would suggest that a nurse interested in surviving a stressful job needs to learn good self-care. Eat well, sleep well, get enough exercise, maintain a supportive network of family and friends, maintain hobbies and other things that bring you joy.

Unfortunately nursing, especially working the nights, weekends and holidays can make all of the above more difficult to get.

I agree... Not having a full time job is good. I work full time hours but do not have an exclusive job. I work medsurg part time days, tele per diem days, and home health per diem. It avoids burnout from one specific job. This works for me since I do need full time hours.

Yoga. It always works. And not faux yoga. Real hatha yoga with an authentic instructor, even if it's on a DVD.

Venting on the phone after a particularly bad shift with my best friend from nursing school, Xanax, and reading a good book while tuning out the rest of the world :)

Someone once told me this "Leave it at the door." Don't stress about work while you are not there. It's hard sometimes but, I think it does work. After I work my 3 days and get in my car to go home I just try and push anything work related out of my mind :-)
