Zoe, we actually live pretty high up, so my O2 is pretty good--although I see a fair amount of people running the trails and I bet they do great when they race. I'm just so stir-crazy from being indoors, I can't stand myself, I guess  I don't think I'm the only one in my class who feels this way, though.

Last fall, we'd take the kids up for the day and set up a couple of camp beds, I'd study on one and DH would sleep and the kids would run around and have a blast. I grew up in the northwest within ten minutes of forests and I think children belong outdoors. We'd spend the whole summer outside playing, my brothers and I. So, Zoe, I think you're right; I should maybe ditch the studying and just go play, huh? BTW, great going on your cupboards. It's too easy to grab what's fast, isn't it (says the girl with the poptart in her mouth) instead of what's good. I hope your virtual muscles aren't too sore, today :D

And Sarah the Snicker Skipper Pizza Piece Pacer . . . good work. Snickers are hard to resist and pizza is pretty good for you, I hear.

I did my chatting in my last post, so here's the real stuff ;)

I've got a question r/t the physiology of exercise. I've read where you don't start burning fat until you've aerobically exercised for 30 minutes. Does anyone know why? And, if you can only exercise for 30 minutes at a time, does it do any good?

Also, I like to work out in the HR range around 155-165; that feels good, but it's above my fat-burning range and into cardiac workout. (I can't think of the right phrase there.) Does that do any good?

I did get five miles done at the gym today :)

Thanks Hiker - I hope you're right on the pizza. :)

Congrats on the five miles - that's great! Sorry, I have no idea on your questions, but now I am curious too. ;)

Hiker burning fat for fuel during exercise is inefficient. We use up our glycogen stores in our muscles and the immediate glucose we have available from meals (if we eat within a certain amount of time) first. Using glucose for fuel is the most efficient because to use fat we have to convert it to glucose first.

However, it's not all bad new for our fat. If we're burning up more than we are taking, to restore the glygogen stores in our body it starts to use the fat up and we loose fat.

That's off the top of my head, so don't take it as gospel truth but it works something like that.

Studies show that 30 minutes of exercise, even walking, has tremendous benefits.

if I just stop, relax from my toes up and picture myself sitting on a sandy beach next to the ocean - bam, I'm out like a light!

Progressive relaxation? (the toes to the head relaxation..) that works great for me ... when I remember to do it!

instead of buying an entire pizza, we each just got one slice. That worked out well - can't over-indulge when you don't have it. So, I had that and a glass of water... Now I'm going to work on another glass of water...

Ug, water.. I had some today... lol...

Sounds heavenly ...

Personally, I'd get winded just carrying the beds! I get SOB so easily - don't know if it's the wt or all the years of smoking (I've quit). Also was told I have early airway disease. Sometimes I worry. I had a CT a year ago and they told me I had a pulmonary embolus (!!!) - then the "real" doctor came along (an hour later) and told me it was "just" the airway disease (but what if the resident was RIGHT??)

We'd spend the whole summer outside playing, my brothers and I.

We did too - mum kicked us out alll the time! lol - I think that's why I'm a "house mouse" today

Poptart, lol. Making me regret not having any "garbage" in my cupboards NOW! lol! As to the muscles -- OOCH! Aach... Ouchie wa wa! (Just practicing for the real thing...)

re the 30 min., I thought 20-30 min 3x a week was good. Don't know about the heart rate, you would think the faster you go the more calories you burn. I think the upper limit is to prevent DAMAGE to the heart but I dunno.

Five miles - AWESOME!

Thanks Hiker - I hope you're right on the pizza...

Why not? 4 food groups, bread, meat, vegetable, and milk groups...

lol

Altho - I think a slice is better for you than a whole pizza!

Brief Workouts Beat Long Sessions

Study: 3 Short Rounds Is All Beginners Need By Miranda Hitti

Aug. 6, 2004 -- Get ready to scratch "I don't have the time" off your list of reasons not to exercise. As little as three 10-minute sessions per day is all it takes for new exercisers to start seeing results.

Several short, moderate- to hard-intensity exercise sessions are more effective at lowering triglyceride blood levels than one long workout, according to new research from Southwest Missouri State University and the University of Missouri.

After a high-fat meal, prolonged elevations in triglycerides, a type of blood fat, can increase the risks of heart disease and atherosclerosis. These fats have also been linked to lowered levels of good HDL cholesterol.

In a study published in journal of Medicine and Science In Sports and Exercise, researchers studied seven men and 11 women aged 18 to 45. None were fitness buffs before the experiment, which called for a vigorous treadmill workout followed by a high-fat meal.

Participants tried two different approaches -- one 30-minute session or three 10-minute sessions with 20-minute breaks. The three 10-minute workouts did a better job of lowering triglycerides after the high-fat meal. The reason may be that the 10-minute workouts boosted metabolism during the rest periods; this would help break down fats from the meals.

That means beginning exercisers don't need a big block of time for fitness. Ten minutes, three times a day can do the job.

"If we can encourage people to be active and accumulate at least 30 minutes of exercise in 10-minute bouts each day, it will have a positive effect on health overall, and more specifically, on the amount of fat in the bloodstream," says researcher Thomas Altena, EdD, in a news release.

If you're already following a fitness plan, there's no need to change it. Because the study was based on people who hadn't been exercising regularly, results might differ for active people.

Hi everyone!

Quickie post today - First, I'm being good. Hit Curves this morning, and am eating well. Could use a little more water, but otherwise I'm a little proud of myself!

Hiker - check your local library and see if they have any books by Covert Bailey. Or maybe do an online search on his material. He really explains all the physiology of exercise as it r/t wt. loss very very well.

Bathroom Drama update- (or the hygiene part of healthy living, per Zoe):

Fri. the water was off again. They had problems hooking the faucet back up. Seemed fixed, on Sat. a.m., both hot and cold taps were working and the drain worked fine, so I put all the stuff back under the sink thinking all that was left was to install the toilet today. The contractor called me at work this afternoon and was quite sheepish. Apparently there was a valve leak under the sink again (???? it was dry this morning...). He had to pull my wet stuff out, fix the leak, and as he was speaking the dry wall that they had to cut out from under the sink was being repaired and patched. Not sure if the toilet is back in yet, guess I'll find out when I get home. At least I got a shower in this morning before it all happened! AND got laundry done yesterday while the water was on!

Hasta Manana!

Interesting article Zoe, I've heard that before.

Blue, glad you got some hygiene in. I hope the toileting part works. Can't do without that!

Zoe - you always find the neatest stuff. ;)

Blue - yikes, hopefully your house comes together soon, house woes are such a stress. I can relate. We had a horrible windstorm on Saturday (70-80 mph gusts) and we lost the top of our carport, our tuff-shed in the back looks like someone took a can-opener to the top, ripped it off, and then crumpled in the sides, and we lost 5 sections of privacy fence. Sigh. I hope you get yours back in working order soon!

Hi Tweety!

I was pretty good last night too - WooHoo! I had a salad with some hamburger on top mixed with salsa and avocado. Then I had another grapefruit for dessert (I seem addicted to grapefruit here lately) - yeay! Finally I feel like I may actually be getting somewhere. ;)

Hi everyone - have a great day!

rofl! i forget that these programs aren't nationwide - although they should be! baby bear hugs is a npo that is set up for expectant moms and moms of children through at least age 4.

ok, enough of that for now. :)

sounds like a great program and it's motivating me to find a good cause to donate my time to!

i too tend to get my heart rate elevated into the cardio range. i don't always do it on purpose, its sometimes hard to "slow down" . i believe it's fine and that we must lose fat/weight as well, i'm proof of that!

however, it's not all bad new for our fat. if we're burning up more than we are taking, to restore the glygogen stores in our body it starts to use the fat up and we loose fat.

exactly!!

i was pretty good last night too - woohoo! i had a salad with some hamburger on top mixed with salsa and avocado. hi !

that sounds good. i love avocado, i only wish it were not so high in fat. i know it's good fat but i could eat an entire avocado and then some!
