VA New Grad Residency

Specialties Government

Hello-

I am a nursing student who will be graduating soon and I just received a tentative job offer for the VA in Gainesville nurse residency program. I am curious to know have anyone else been through this residency or any new grad residency program through the VA. Also, wanted to know how long does the process take before there is a final job offer? From what I read from past threads the process can be a little bit long with the VA. Any input/thought would be appreciated.

Hi sweetest_nurse,

How did you find out about the nurse residency program and how did you apply? I've been looking under usajobs.gov and haven't been able to find anything

It was posted on USA jobs back in march when I initially applied. The job posting closed like the third week of March

Specializes in ED.

It is usually listed as graduate nurse technician. They open in the summer usually with the occasional fall-winter opening. Usajobs.gov is where you look.

I know many of my fellow coworkers were in the nurse residency program before hired at the VA hospital. I have also seen these nurse residences not get jibs because of performance. Hiring process does take a while, but seems a little easier if you are in the residency program. Not sure if it is all VA hospitals but the one I work at has a residency program after hired as a staff nurse for first year nurses. I missed this aspect by 3 months and wish I had the opportunity to get the extra support and mentorship.

The VA where I work doesn't call it's program a residency but it sure sounds like the same kind of thing. I applied for a student nursing technician position one year before I graduated nursing school and was hired for the med surg floor. I was only guaranteed a year of employment and I basically worked as a cna while getting to practice skills like IV restarts and dressing changes. I had to take the same annual training as the other patient care folks and I had wonderful opportunities to take additional trainings like ekg interpretation, etc. After a year of very flexible scheduling the job ends. After that only a few techs are offered GNT positions which may or may not be on the ward you have been working on. In my experience this is basically an offer of an RN position once you become licenced. In the meantime you get to begin your nursing orientation which, in my case lasted three months. I've been a nurse on the ward for a year now and I love it. The application and hiring process is intensive but going this route was much smoother than trying to come in from the outside facilities. I oriented with a nurse that had finally made it through the process 10 months after submitting his application. It took only 2-3 months as an SNT and I transitioned right into my new role when they converted me to GNT. I don't know if that helps much but that was my experience. :)

Hello, I realize this topic is old, but I was wondering if anyone had any examples of interview questions from the VA?
