Hi Ya!

It figures, I get picked to have a background/ security clearance done. Why is it so important to have for us as nurses? And what happens if you don't get it?

(I was under the impression that this was done as part of boarding process)

thanks in advance

All officers require a security clearance. It is part and parcel of being in the military. You never know when you might be required to have access to classified info. If you can't obtain the minimum required clearance after going through due process, most likely you will not be allowed to enter or continue on active duty.

edie you should be okay, I dont think they are looking for things that happened in a divorce or a family emergency. I think they are looking for gambling debts, criminal records, drug and etoh abuse, hanging out w the taliban, stuff like that. they want to be sure we wont sell out to the devil so to speak. at least that is what I have been told.

hmm.... don't do dope, drink very little etoh, don't know any middle easterners, don't have a record (probably the closest is a speeding ticket) and have been to a casino 3 times in my life. I've lost everything---my house, my car.......over doing the right thing--raising my kiddos.

You would think they'd want someone like me-----without a question----low overhead. HA! Oh well, worst case scenario, I can appeal it

I don't think it's a big deal, I'm going through it too. I had a secret clearence and spent 14 years in the Marines and guard.

Hello All:

This is taken from the June 1 2009 Army Times,, pg 13 (OFFduty section):

"One of the broad adjudicative guidelines for granting a security clearance is 'financial considerations'. Financial conditions that could prevent a clearance include a history of failing to meet financial obligations, deceptive or illegal financial practices (such as tax evasion), inability to satisfy debts, unexplained affluence and financial problems r/t gambling, drugs or alcohol.

"While proceeding with bankruptcy doesn't automatically disqualify you from holding a security clearance, odds are you are going to lose your top-secret clearance. There are mitigating factors that could help prevent the loss of your clearance: if the inability to pay your debt was an isolated incident; if the conditions that resulted in your need to file bankruptcy were largely beyond your control, such as death, divorce or a business downturn; if you are receiving counseling for what caused the bankruptcy and the problem is being resolved; or if you initiated a good-faith effort to repay the debts.

"When you consult with a bankruptcy attorney, make sure to mention that you hold a security clearance so you can try to mitigate the consequences that a bankruptcy may have"
