RN going from HH to SNF/LTC, advice?

Hi, Im interviewing this week for a job at a local nursing home and wondering if any out there can compare the differences for me of the assessment tools. In Home Health we used OASIS- how does that compare with MDS? Who does it and how often? I worked Home Health and Hospice for 6-1/2 years but havent been inside a nursing home for 30 years!!! and that was as an aide working my way through nursing school back in the day when nurses wore white uniforms AND caps!! Things have sure changed!

I found the OASIS data set a ridiculously long and cumbersome thing, please tell me the M in MDS really means minimum? Like all the other government lingo, I bet theres nothing Minimum about it, is there?

Any advice to teach this old dog some new tricks?

I don't remember much about the Oasis, but when I did skim thru it yrs ago it was very similar to the MDS. The MDS now days is no where near minimum. I haven't done one in yrs but have looked thru the ones that our residents have and it is LONG!

Will you be doing the MDS? What type of position are you interviewing for? The MDS and careplans are normally done by the RNAC or MDS nurse. Sometimes the unit managers will do them too. It all depends on the facility size.

Ahh, just found out I wont have to do them, thats a relief! what a concept, somebody that just does the giant paperwork......( Im sure theres plenty for the floor staff to do too!:D)

HH could learn something from that idea, the paperwork was killer in that job and it could have been more streamlined by having a cert/re-cert person.

oh, and I got the job, just dont know what it is yet as some internal shuffling will be going on next few weeks and then I suppose I will get whatever is left over! after no paycheck for the past few months Im ready to do whatever!! please, somebody wish me luck!

Still dont know what this position entails as far as scheduling, starts as a "call in". I will get orientation of 4 days, 4 Pm's and 2 nocs. So far I have been investigated, fingerprinted, peed in a cup and signed countless gov mandated mumbo jumbo forms and they offered me $20 an hour. For that, I will cheerfully wash floors after what Ive been thru lately looking for work. the month before my HH agency bit the dust and laid everyone off, I saw the writing on the wall and started looking for work- that was in March! I applied for loads of non skilled jobs, had a few interviews that didnt pan out, was offered $8 an hour to room pt's for a so-called pediatrician whose entire practice appeared to rely on weekly drug tests and Rx renewals for medicaid amphetamine junkies (RAN, did not WALK from that guy!)..................... so, anywho, like I said, dont really care what this job entails, Im not afraid to work hard and I will do whatever I need to to bring home a paycheck again. hey, Im already scheduled to make $1600- Ill take it!

Thanks for the update. Good luck and am glad to see you are happy with whatever job they find for you. A similar situation happened to me. I had 6+ yrs doing OASIS as an RN Case Mgr and then switched to LTC. I was also told that they weren't sure where they would put me as they were doing much reshuffling internally and that they would see where I settled in best. Gee, I wonder if we work for the same place, :lol2: Where are you, BTW. I'm in California. Anyhow, I started my training on a medicine cart, then within 3 weeks was changed to admit/discharge/QA nurse. Then was asked to join MDS a month or so later. Then 2 months later due to my supervisor being promoted, was offered Dept. Head Lead MDS Coordinator. It's been quite a ride and I have much, much, much to learn. All this happened in 5 months employment, so my head is spinning :uhoh3: but I am up for the challenge!

FYI, MDS is every bit as tedious as OASIS, if not more, but I love it. I would be curious to see what state you live in!
