RN going from HH to SNF/LTC, advice?

Specialties Geriatric

Hi, Im interviewing this week for a job at a local nursing home and wondering if any out there can compare the differences for me of the assessment tools. In Home Health we used OASIS- how does that compare with MDS? Who does it and how often? I worked Home Health and Hospice for 6-1/2 years but havent been inside a nursing home for 30 years!!! and that was as an aide working my way through nursing school back in the day when nurses wore white uniforms AND caps!! Things have sure changed!

I found the OASIS data set a ridiculously long and cumbersome thing, please tell me the M in MDS really means minimum? Like all the other government lingo, I bet theres nothing Minimum about it, is there?

Any advice to teach this old dog some new tricks?

Thanks!

Hi California girl, Im in the land of big cars, big snow and BIG unemployment- Michigan. After all these years of driving to see pt's it will be a relief to park and have them all in one place! I will miss the time in between though! I was thinking the HH experience would be good for becoming the DC nurse at this place too, I can only hope I will have an opportunity like yours- good for you!

Somehow I knew MDS would turn out to be OASIS on steroids- when is the world going to recognize that nurses are professionals that will do the best job they can without needing such a ridiculous amount of awful regulation/paperwork?? Think how much more we could do for our pt's without all that B******* :D

Thanks for the reply! HannahLeah
