My last five shifts I've been on the floor. One of my floor nurses is out indefinitely with a legitimate and terrifying back ailment. The other called off today knowing the other was out because she's "sick." My butt. So the director and I did it all today. I've been getting in early and staying late. Carrying 11 credits as well.

It's interesting, because I have a different view of nursing and administration than I did before. The staff nurses really do think that we do nothing all day and the attitudes today were quite revealing and people are idiots. You really shouldn't gloat that your big boss is working the floor after you refused to help out. And let her hear about it.

One idiot yesterday said to me, and neither of us realized the boss was there, "SHE's going to work the floor tomorrow?" Loud and raucous laughter. I just answered, "She's clinically quite capable." Then the boss piped up. "I can take a cart!" And she did.

People are going to see her initials all over band-aids tomorrow.

Idiots.

Perhaps your staff dislikes you because you refer to them as idiots.

Well if a person is sick there's nothing you can do about it, you don't want a sick nurse taking care of patients.I would call off too because my health comes first. It is okay for a director to work because she is not there to stay still like a statue. Idiot is such a harsh word and I wouldn't call someone an Idiot because he/she called off sick.

I had a nurse demand that one of the managers come up and feed one of the residents because SHE was too busy so off the ADON went to help. I was making rounds and who was SITTING at the nurses' station eating her lunch? The nurse who was too busy to feed a resident. Will we be so willing to help out again? It might be petty but no...most likely not...and don't y'all tell me the residents come first. That is a given, but if you have time to eat lunch where you're not supposed to be eating in the first place, you have time to feed your resident.

CCM, you can't believe that stuff I found today. I started insisting that people initial dressings. Stuff marked as done and the dressing dated days ago, resolved wounds still being documented every day with nothing to note they had healed....That V. called off knowing that K. is going for back surgery that could leave her paralyzed -- I'd've been there dragging my IV pole behind me.

I don't think the OP was saying the nurse who called off sick was an idiot. It was the one insulting the big boss.

I hate to fire nurses but more than that, I hate nurses who don't do their jobs and don't care. I had a nurse initial a dressing she hadn't done and then write a note about the condition of the wound. I wanted to fire her right there but she didn't have enough write ups in her file (think union). I told her we'd be watching her....big surprise she didn't sign off meds for half a day. She is no longer employed. With all the nurses out there looking for work, why would anyone keep an employee who didn't do what they were supposed to do? And you're right. PAI.

I agree with you. I dislike the most people who do not care about their job because that makes you wonder why they are in that field. If a nurse cannot manage her time and she forgets to sign off meds she is going to harm the patient. I know everybody forgets or makes mistakes but not that often. I do not like lazy people.

I am such a fan of yours as I believe your knowledge and passion for nursing allows you mentor many of us newbies on here. I do understand where you come from as I have previously been in administration. When my door was shut, I heard the rumors I was sleeping, eating, playing on computer, etc. When in reality I was trying to develop strategies and crunching numbers, pulling my hair out and shedding tears thinking I was going to have to cut back or lay off many of the ones who swore I was eating bon bons and watching movies. With that said, on the other side of the fence (clinical nursing), I have yet to take a lunch or mini break, sometimes thinking bladder going to explode.. while I see our supervisor socializing with friends in nutrition room, etc. and laugh at the fact that she should really be doing the admissions, but since I started and doing such a good job she would let me finish.

I agree it must be frustrating to see someone eating who just asked for help, however, they are entitled to a break too. I get a bit frustrated when I am up and down the halls, short on cna's and trying get meds passed, treatments completed, charting completed, and heavens sake there be one little thing throw me off, and there I see her in her office on computer, or strolling around, hanging out and staying away from the floor as much as possible. There have been many a days I was just overwhelmed and it would have been nice for supervisor or admin to come and do a little favor such as a feed so I can take a rest and maybe get some charting done while having a bite to eat. Lately, I have been asking for help as I have become tired of being told I need to leave on time (no overtime) no matter what situation arises but being called in the next day to complete my work (off clock of course) so now i clock out and complete charting before I leave. Supervisor out the door at 11pm.. no ifs, ands, or butts about it. Pleasantly enough, she has been pleasant and always been there when I have asked and I have learned tremendously from her excellence in clinical skills. It would just be nice for her to do it on own without asking knowing we are all swamped. BTW..I have gained 8 pounds in 2 months on 3-11 because I do not take break to eat and I have been eating when get home at midnight. UGHHHH.
