I am a unit manager for a 49-bed unit in Connecticut. I do all the MDS, PPS, care planning, and act as head nurse of the unit. I started 11 months ago with no MDS background and no preceptor, and have had to teach myself most of what I need to know. I used to do battle with the corporate accounts receivable person; now she calls me when she has questions. I think of PPS as a math puzzle. The nurses here refuse to learn anything about MDS, and nobody is pushing them to learn.

The Q&A is good because no matter how well you know the basics, there's always going to be a situation you haven't anticipated.

You might want to visit the AANAC web site [American Association for Nursing Assessment Coordinators], or get your hands on a Briggs catalog. They have the 'basic training' for RNAC's available via correspondence, and I believe CD-ROM. You can visit their web site at: http://www.aanac.org/

    I hope this helps.

I can probably help too; I was a resident care manager/MDS coordinator for almost 2 years, and have plenty of administrative experience as well. (Which is why I work part-time as a hospital nurse now.......but that's a story for another day.)

MEMEMEME. What a great chance to increase my knowledge. I worked ltc for about 5 years and went to our hospitals snf unit 15 months ago. I am the mds coordinator in title, although things are quit different here than ltc with this title. We are a now 18 bed unit. Our care planning is based on the hospital's which is much less detailed. Heck, we rarely even have a 30 day admission. My nurse manager trained me and I've had hundreds of questions that the Briggs manual hasn't addressed. I wanted to destroy my pc after about 8 hours with it today. I'm rambling, unwinding from my caffeine induced spin. I would love to participate.

I'll be glad to help if I can. I'm an LPN/MDS associate. Learning the ropes myself. I love the job. Our facility is in our review window, so life is kinda hectic at the moment. Would love to join your discussion group though.
