I'm supervisor on the weekend.

Came in today and everyone has whatever has been galloping through our residents' intestines. Immediately closed all units, notified dietary that we would be serving meals on the wings, and told activities that I understood their desire to have the residents play Bingo but we would not be sending them to the main dining room. Cancelled church for tomorrow, left instructions that the units would remain closed. Activities came to us. :) I made a refreshments run for my old ones. One said, "Are you bartending?" "Yes, B. What's your pleasure?"

Got someone sent out for PN. Told the family NOT to go because we didn't even know when or if she'd have a bed. Made them feel better.

Had a telephone call with a family about a resident who is beginning to die. She keeps going out in sepsis, last time back we started her on prophylactic abx, still didn't work, changed them, her fevr is still there. The son came in and I explained the MOLST and they are calling a family conference today. He understands what is going on and I explained that they needed to be comfortable with their decision, that my feelings didn't count, but that we can not make her well, we can just keep her alive a bit longer. Helped them face the inevitable decisions they need to make.

This is a bittersweet kind of day. I feel pride in what I do, insecurity that maybe I am not doing everything right, and glad that I can make a difference for people.

LTC has its issues but I don't know that I want to be anywhere else.

You sound like the type of supervisor for which I would like to have in the LTC in which I work..action-oriented, no hemming/hawing, compassionate. God Bless You!

I will remember you in my prayers on Monday morning when you are trying to explain your rationale to TPTB. :D Seriously, I believe in your decisions 100%. I sound bitter because I have been bitten on the you-know-where one too many times and am currently looking for a job.......

Meh. They can kiss me on the you-know-where. They can't replace me. We don't have nurses here. And I don't come out too short on unemployment.

And why she didn't close the unit until FRIDAY is beyond me. The mind wobbles, to quote Kelly Bundy.

Oh Sue, if you EVER decide to move to CT let me know where your going to move..I'd follow you as my super anywhere! You take the bull by the horns and don't pass the buck!

We have that wonderful "bug" in our LTC also..ugghh..same thing.."lock down" with activities, dining room, and we are trying to keep visitors out but there are those few who insist on coming to visit..of course they will be the same ones who complain about how THEY got sick (complaining to us that they are sick while standing at the nurses station after visiting..great..lets just restart the whole bug thing again) or how their loved one got sick....go away!!
