I got the job!

So, I got the job! (I posted last week about what I should expect.) I start on the floor on July 1st, on day shift.

During the interview I thought the ADON had said there were 6 CNA's for the entire 4 units (40 patients each unit), but I am so glad I misunderstood. She said around 6 CNA's for EACH unit. That is much better, I was really feeling sorry for those CNA's! LOL!

At first the person who does the schedule tried to schedule me for only 2 days of orientation and then put me on nights on my own after that. I thought "TWO days of orientation? Are you joking?" I have a lot of nursing experience, but NONE in long term care. So I went back to talk with the DON and she clarified that I would get a MONTH of orientation and then go to DAYS on my own. That made much more sense! I don't mind nights, but I definitely minded getting only 2 days of orientation! I think the staffing person was thinking only of filling her holes and not the safety issue of throwing me in there without proper orientation! Just out of curiosity, how much orientation did you all get?

Anyway, I am sure I will posting a lot more after I get started! I look forward to getting to know you all!

It's nice to hear something positive once in a while. Congratulations!

Yay congratulationses!

I got about 9 days of orientation for the skilled unit I work on. I was also offered two days of orientation initially, but I refuse to take the job without more orientation (my first job too).

Wow! A month of orientation!? That's awesome! I'm a nurse on a skilled unit it a LTC facility, and I was only given SIX DAYS of orientation. Initially, four days but I was allowed to request two more days if I felt I needed them (which I did). But I'm lucky because all of the nurses where I work are nice and will be willing to answer any of my questions after I go on the floor by myself. But congrats to you!

Congrats on the job! My 1st job I worked days and it was my 1st job as a nurse. I worked there as an aide so I already knew the residents. They gave me a month of orientation and it was far too long. After a week or two I was on my own and the nurse that was training me was twiddling her fingers! My current job (I work nights) and I was initially scheduled for 5 nights (12 hour shifts, my 1st job was 8s). The 2nd night my trainee and I sent the person who stays until 830 home and we passed the HS meds, one of us on each side). After that my DNS called and asked how I was feeling. I told her fine and felt like I could handle things. The person who trained me was a person who HAD to follow a schedule. I wanted to be on my own so I could get my own routine. So the 3rd night I was on my own and did just fine.

Thank you all for the well wishes.

There are 4 different units in this facility. So my orientation is a day or two on each unit plus 2 days with the med aid, just to get the info on how the meds work there. All together it ends up being 10 days of orientation as a charge nurse, (not counting the days with the med aid). I will be doing 12 hour shifts, so that is just 3 days a week.

I really felt like the DNS had my back and wanted me to be as comfortable as possible which I appreciated! I think that is a good sign!
