How to get started in travel nursing?
Hello, so my husband and I are considering me doing travel nursing. I have lots of experience, I am finding a ton of hospice assignments online, but I am confused as to how to get started? I thought I would need to find an agency to apply to, then look for assignments, but I am finding these websites like travel nurse source that list all different jobs with different agencies. Do you just apply to a different agency for each job? Do these bigger sites find the jobs for you? I am confused. =(

med/surg to hospice..on-call position
I am currently an on call hospice nurse and in the past have had a position similar to yours. My only concern would be experience. Hospice is very different from med/surg. I had been a nurse for 8 years when I came into hospice with a varied background and started out with a detailed orientation and was a case manager for at least 6 months before moving into the on call position. One of the challenges for me was that in med/surg there is always another nurse to talk with, run things by, get advice from etc. In hospice and particularly on call you are it! And even with med/surg, ER, nursing home experience it was a big learning curve for me initially.

Masters program, how to choose?
Hello, I am an RN with my BSN. I have been a nurse for 10 years and am considering going back to school for my FNP. I have been researching schools and am overwhelmed! How on earth do you choose? I have read the threads about whether what school you go to matters to your career or not. I live in a rural area where there is a provider shortage so I don't believe there would be a problem finding a job, but who knows? Can anyone give me an idea on how to start looking? I will be using finanicial aid, loans, scholarships etc. so cost does matter. But is going to University of Phoenix going to hurt me? Do you have to look at more prestigious schools like Georgetown? A state college? Help? Any guidance would be appreciated.

ACLS? Help!
Hello, so I just got a job at a cardiac rehab clinic. I am trying to brush up on ekg interpretation, but I have a LONG way to go. I have very little previous cardiology experience. I did take ACLS in the past and did pass it, but it was about 7 years ago so I don't really remember it. I am supposed to take ACLS monday and I am panicked! I just did the pre course assessment on the website and did not do well! My weak point is is identifying the rhythms! How much rhythm interpretation is there? How difficult is this to pass? Any advice?

Interview for cardiac rehab job!
Hello,I had a phone interview for a cardiac rehab job last week with the director. I think it went well as she said the nurse who runs the program would be contacting me next. I want this job SOOOOO badly! Does anyone have any advice on this second interview?

Have a phone interview next week with Fresenius!
Thanks for the reply Brooke. I guess they are hiring for a new clinic that is being built right now. I am wondering where the training would be since the clinic won't be opening until the first of year, the nearest big town where I think they may have some existing clinics is an hour away. I wouldn't mind driving I guess. So I guess this phone interview is just the tip of the iceburg in the process? Do you like working for them?

Have a phone interview next week with Fresenius!
Thank you all! The interview is with Fresenius. I sent in my resume, then got notice to do an online assessment (that I was shocked was so involved!) then I got a request for a phone interview. I hope it goes well. Thanks again for all of the tips, I will definitely take them to heart!

IVF excessive?
I agree that IV fluids are excessive in these situations. Sometimes I think it is more of a comfort measure for the families. I cannot tell you how many family members I have heard say that NOT doing iv fluids means we are letting the person starve or dehydrate to death. NO, they are already dying! But the families do not see it this way. By the way, it seems I am one of the only one's who immediately got iv fluids from IVF, I guess I am just one track hospice minded right now! =)

Lifting in hospice?
Well, dr said, minimum 3 weeks from surgery with no lifting more than 20 lb. I feel bad that I didn't discuss this with my work prior to the surgery.I guess I will give them the note and see what they say.

Lifting in hospice?
Just curious, why would the thread be closed? I really am not asking for medical advice, I am just wondering from other hospice nurses experience, how much is lifting a part of what we do? I know it varies. But especially being on call, I am going out to patients homes in the middle of the night and on weekends when there is usually no one but family to assist me.

Lifting in hospice?
Quick question, I just had my gallbladder out laparoscopically last week. I am a hospice on call nurse. I go in for my 1 weeks post op appointment today. I remember from the presurgery appointment that the surgeon had said no lifting more than 20 lb for an extended period of time, like 6 weeks or so. I am trying to decide if that is the case, how likely is it that I will be put into a position to lift with my job. Alot of times I don't have to go anywhere, just take phone calls, and if I attend a death I can have the funeral home move the body, but there are also times, like washing a body where I would need to turn people, or just to assist families in repositioning patients. I have no idea what my work is going to say, I am waiting to get instructions from the surgeon today, any thoughts?

A Dying Persons Tear
I do home hospice, but I personally have not noticed this. I would think it is more a coincidence. But who knows what they see? We have had patients who see angels, I heard of one who immediately looked up to the sky and raised both of her arms just as she died. I personally would like to think they are seeing their loved ones and Jesus welcoming them home.
